Dog food in general tend to make the rodents more greasy and smell bad.

Dog Food Help
Dog food DOES make your rodents greasy and just unhealthy looking in general.
It's hard to find rodent lab block in bulk at a cheap price in Canada. I'm in Alberta and a lot of breeders use 16% UNMEDICATED hog grower. About $16 for 25kg at a UFA store. I'll usually pick up a big bag of bird seed with peanuts and all that fun stuff to mix in as well.

I believe ol'Roy isn't even fit for dogs. I would stick to the rat chow im sure you will find a bad batch of anything you buy at one time or another. Have you checked for a hog chow with high protine? Also, I stay away from anything with red dye in it.

You are correct, I wouldn't feed ol Roy to anything

Dog Food Help
Read the list of ingredients on the bag and compare to rat chow. I've been using a brand called sprout 18% protein dog food from fleet farm, it does NOT make the rodents greasy or smelly, not all dog foods are made the same

Re: Dog Food Help
There are all natural dog foods that are made with quality ingredients.

Yes but nutritional requirements are different for dogs and rats

True. I wouldn't feed rats dog food or vice versa.

I feed my rats pedigree and they are happy healthy and definitely not greasy or smelly. I tried switching to doggie bag brand from tractor supply a while back. but there was a huge difference in the rats. they where eating almost twice as much per week and they just looked unhealthy. within 2 weeks of switching back they looked nice and healthy again so I've stuck with the pedigree ever since.

Re: Dog Food Help
I suppose it depends on brand.
I've met a few people who fed dog food and man, their rats were nasty. They stunk like no other, were greasy, and their coats were not soft or smooth. Just overall gross rats.
I bought a few rats from one of those guys and put them on my food(Mazuri) and they transformed. Smooth soft coats, their stink went away, just overall better body condition.
But I guess if it works for you, then good. Nothings wrong with that.
Don't change what already works.
I personally like using breeding formulated lab blocks.

Re: Dog Food Help
Rats do very well on dog food or hog feed. Rat blocks are great but too costly, I have tried them all and like to mix it up and not stay with one feed too long. My rats look and smell fine on dog food, just my 2 cents.

Re: Dog Food Help
Ol' Roy is working grate there not greasy at all they look nice on Ol' Roy and they don't smell more then when they where on lab chow people are saying just buy rat food well if it was that easy i would be buying it like someone said its hard to find good rat food in Canada i used a lab chow and got a bad batch that killed around 250 rats so ya that's why i want to use dog food or hog food but i was told hog feed was bad because of the copper in it
the thing is that ol roys dog food is smaller now the bags are small and the pieces of food are smaller so now the rats can pull it throw the mesh
so can anyone tell me any good and cheap dog food or pig feed that i can get in Canada ON

Dog Food Help
Try taking the extra 2 seconds to use some sort of punctuation and I'm sure people would be much more inclined to help. I honestly had trouble figuring out what your last post said just bc it was one big long run on sentence...

x2. Ol'Roy is the crappiest of crap dog food out there. Feeding dog isnt bad, you just have to find a decent one. I used to feed Iams sensitive naturals to my rats, but even with my discount at the pet store it just got too expensive. My rats did great on it and never smelled. Just got costly.I recently switched to Mazuri breeder 9f. So glad i did, cuz im savin so much money.

I agree.. ol Roy and other cheap dog foods are garbage for dogs. Full of grains and dyes. In an emergency, if something major came up, then yeah something in the dogs belly is better than letting them starve. But for people who can actually afford a good food for their dogs but choose to buy cheap, shame on them. I'm a pretty poor person lol but our dogs eat a decent food, taste of the wild. It's on the cheaper side of the better foods. If I had the money I'd be doing raw.
I feed doggy bag to my rats only because I can't find the deals others can on rat foods. It's mostly grains and no red dyes. I've called and asked places to order it for me but no way am I paying $40-50 for a 20lb bag. I just suffer with the rat stench :( they reak!!
hmm maybe ill try calling around again.. ya never know?

What I'd do is go to the Mazuri or Harlan website and get the %breakdown for their rodent food; crude protein, available fat, etc.
Then find a dog food/pig food that is comparable
