I was bored so I started a new project
I had a whole pile of old shed skins that I had no idea what to do with, other than toss them out (I had been saving them for a big project that fell through). So I thought for a while and figured it would be really neat to make some "snake skin" accessories. This was just my test one. Now I'm trying to think of what else to do it with. It feels so cool and it looks pretty neat (I think). I still need to apply a few more coats to it (and you can see in the pics it is still wet), but I am really pleased with it. Not sure if it's something I should wear out around here though. Snakes aren't popular (especially in New Mexico!) and I'm worried it may give the wrong idea about snake skin? Wish I could make it obvious that the snake it came from is alive, lol!
    Anyhow, here's attempt number one.

I have a friend who keeps ball pythons who is going to give me some of those too, so I'm pretty excited to work with that. I think it would be neat to try bp sheds over colored bases. The boa pattern would just get lost, I think.

Nice, how big is the boa you took it form?

For that shed maybe three and a half or four feet? She's pushing five feet now.

Very cool. Haven't seen this done before. I've seen the snake shed nails though.

That's actually where I got the idea from. It's the same basic idea, but I tried to find some sort of guide online and I couldn't really find anything, so we will see how durable it turns out to be.

That's pretty cool. I'm amazed you got it on in one nice piece without it tearing. Were you working with a fresh shed that was still wet? Also what are you sealing it with?

No, that one was maybe a year old or so? When she shed originally I was pretty careful about preserving it. I was very careful when I cut it, and the glue helped it kind of rehydrate enough to work with it.

Awesome little project! I'm not really one for headbands, but I'd wear that! I wonder what it would look like if you tried different color headbands? Next project, maybe? ; ) lol

Yup, that's why I asked my friend for her ball pythons's sheds. I am using a fake silk basic headband as a base (it gives it a good feel), and they have them in all sorts of colors. I just think my boa's pattern would get lost on a darker background. But I think a normal bp could look pretty sweet!

Now I'm trying to figure out what other accessories I could apply this technique to.

Made a mistake last night though and set it down where it was wet so it tore a little. I used extra skin to patch it, but lesson learned! I need to find some sort of top coat for the whole thing too.

Maybe you should get an albino boa? That would probably work against black or darker colors. Lol I think I'm going to need a few BCI just for all the shed projects I have in mind!! What if you coat it in a couple layers of polyurethane? That should make it a bit tougher, or so I would think. Or maybe it would melt the skin :/ I have no clue lol. Just tossing things out there! Definitely keep us updated on any new projects. I'm very interested!
