Can i mix nix with just regular water?

Wanted to know if i could mix up nix with just regular water instead of distilled someone let me know thank you

Yes you can, but I don't know the mixture either, but you want to dilute it to where it's not going to harm you to your snake but will still kill the mites.

Don't use Nix! Even diluted can harm the snake! If you want to kill mites:

Give snakes clear water bath, then heavily coat them in mineral oil and let them hang out in a tub for about 15 minutes. The oil smothers the mites. Rinse the snake off as well as possible--he'll still be oily for 2-3 days--in a betadine solution bath. The mixture should look like weak tea. You also need to clean the tank, especially under the lip of the top and around the seams. Best bet is to fill the tanks completely with water (outside, with a hose) and let it sit for a while. You can also use Flea shampoo for cats and dogs in the tanks.
Lastly, bug bomb the room since mites will jump out and hang on to curtains and in carpets. You need to take care of the tank and room if you want the mites gone, not just the snake. Using mineral oil is MUCH safer.
We had an infestation and four snakes at the time and we did these things in one day and by the next the mites were gone and we've never had them since.

The odds of your snake dieing is slim to none... I've used nix before, I nix the cage down and let the snake sit in a tub of water for 30 minutes with some dish soap, very little amount...

There are mites out there that are becoming resistant to Permethrin which is the main ingredient in Provent-a-Mite. I believe they're out west, though it hasn't been completely identified and I'm not putting any names out in the air. But if you do get new animals, please make sure you're QT appropriately. Also it doesn't hurt to be proactive and treat any new snakes regardless if you see mites or not, this is what I do. This way it's like an added layer of protection.

I wasn't making an argument. I wouldn't use Nix personally and I had no idea what the ingredient was as well. I was just putting it out there about the mites somewhere in the West are becoming resistant to Permethrin. Hell I use the Reptile Relief thing mostly, though I do spray the QT tubs with Provent a mite.

Also for those ordering Provent a mite it's cheaper to get it directly from them. They've lowered the price to like $15.95 and other places still have it at $17+. Just a heads up.

Ah. I've never actually read the can. I know it creates some barrier that lasts up to 30 days or it may of been 30 days minimum. It's been years since I've upkept on it. I just know Provent a mite works well.

I love the stuff. I've never had mites but I am paranoid so I PaM all substrate and table coverings when I go to shows as well as new additions. (Not the snakes themselves but the paper towel they live on)

I hear you there. I'd rather be safe then sorry. There is no telling what is crawling around at the shows. Especially since some people bring a ton of WC stuff.

Provent a Mite and Nix both effectively kill mites.

Provent a Mite and Nix, if used improperly, both kill snakes.

The difference is that Provent a Mite comes with some common sense instructions that mitigate, but do not eliminate that risk.

There is no magic ingredient in Provent a Mite that causes it to miraculously have 30 days of residual activity. In fact there are several other permethrin sprays - like Sawyer's - that make the same claim.

If you like paying a little more money for a product that takes longer to get and comes with directions, by all means use Provent a Mite. However don't think that it's 100% safe and don't think it has some magic powers that other permethrin mixtures of the same concentration lack.

Permethrin's half-life is well documented and it is affected by environmental conditions. The reason it can last "up to 30 days" in reptile enclosures is that they're kept out of direct sunlight and while they're humid, they're not swimming in water. In a high-humidity enclosure like you'd have with a BRB where the substrate has more moisture or you're more likely to have condensation on the interior walls, the permethrin will break down faster.
