Bought a normal with a nice belly, possibly het pied?
Picked this girl up as a normal because of her awesome markings. Looked through the het pied marker thread from a few years ago, but just wanted yalls opinion on her.

No way to know without breeding, but normals can have those markings. This is a picture of a male I produced. He was not het pied (or het anything for that matter).

Ah, those marking look very very similar to the ones on mine. I will just have to wait a couple years and see what happens :)

Either way, she is an awesome looking normal!

The only foolproof way would be to breed to prove it out. I don't rely too much on markers as they can be a false directive.

only way to know is to prove it out,

    Markers aren't 100%.

For you to prove her out, your best bet would be to get a visual pied male and hope for pied babies. You could go with a het to het pairing, but unless you get great odds, it may take a few years to prove her out (if she is indeed het).

If you bought it as a normal, chances are, that is exactly what it is.
If you want to try to prove her out for fun, and have a Pied laying around, go for it. But, I would say, if you want to go that route, Het Pied females are pretty cheap now, why breed a probable normal to a Pied? If anything, get a Co Dom Het Pied and then at least you do not end up with just a bunch of cheap Hets.

Don't try breeding it to prove it out. You bought it as a normal it will be a normal. To often people buy a normal and hope its actually something different, because of how it looks, when its not. Now I am not saying its impossible to buy a normal and it is actually a morph. I am just saying people ask a lot and it lands way way WAY more in the favor of just being a normal owned by someone with wishful thinking.

What's the harm in breeding her to a male visual pied if you were going to keep and breed her anyway? The male wouldn't really be "wasted" since you can still breed him with more than the one female. The worst you would get are babies that are 100% het pied. If she doesn't prove out, no big deal. Breed her with something else the next year. I would go for it at least once when she's big enough to breed. My curiosity would be too much for me in that situation :P.

i dont see strong pied markers here.

usually it makes sense to look for markers when you KNOW its a 66% or 50% or 25% possible het for something.

if you know nothing about the genetics of the parents and purchased it as a normal, and the markers are not particularly strong or conclusive, it doesnt make much sense to try to prove it.

as others said, with a pied male, you want to breed him to 100% het pied females, or to 100% het + extra gene females, or maybe to possible het + extra gene females. Or to normal females with plenty of nice extra genes that you want to work into your pied project.

you want to hit visual pieds, or if you produce hets, you at least want hets with an extra gene that is desireable to have in a pied project.

There are PLENTY of breeders who sell hets wholesale as. "bi-products."

The chances of your snake being het pied are likely slim, but if you bought it as a normal with plans of breeding it, then there is no harm in trying. As one poster already said, buy a dom or codom het pied (or even a visual pied) and give it a whirl. Nothing to lose.

A lot of downers on here for sure. :colbert:

No need to throw the plans in the crapper. Just be practical about it, and make sure you use a visual pied male. As one person said, if you were going to breed her anyway, I don't see any harm in trying it out, if it's what you want to do. Just be prepared for the babies to all be normal, and then you have only to gain if you do get lucky. As long as you breed her to a visual pied, worst case scenario would be a clutch of 100% hets. Best of luck. ;)
