Can I leave a black light on 24/7?

I bought a black light to use for my lamp. Will I be able to leave this on 24/7? also I have a HUMAN heat pad with high/medium/low settings, any advice on how to use these?

you can use your black light but it most likely won't give off much heat. put the enclosure on top of the heating pad, try to leave a little space between the two... adjust the high, medium, or low according to how much temperature it gives off. it's a guessing game for a while.

Nope, Thats not true, they give off alot of heat. Believe it or not, but a 75 watt black light gives off a ENORMOUS amount of heat for a 75 watt. The only disadvanatge is it doesnt project the heat down as much if you dont have a dome light. Other than that they are fine, and it gives the bp a sence of night, alot of ppl recommend a black light. but i found from when using 24/7 they tend to burn out alot. But with a price of 2-3$ it all makes up for it

i have a 75 watt blacklight and it's nothing more than a night light. piece of crap.

are you using a dome light fixture?, I used mine several times, with several differnt light names, some of which i bought at a dollar store, and by its self it would heat my tank up to 83-86, by no means am i saying it is better than a pet store bought infrared, but it deffinlty does the job for me for a cheap price. However a infrared lasts MUCH longer, the black wear out quick, i go throguh mabey 2-4 a month

i hear that red lamps are used bc snakes can't see them. i'm pretty sure they can see a blacklight. or sense one rather.

Well I tested the black light (it has a dome thingy especially for reptiles I got at petsmart) and the temp in the cage went to a little over 90 degrees FAST! and I turned the heating pad on medium, and then turned it completely off and the tank stayed the same temp so I dont even think the heating pad will do anything!

As far as snakes seeing the black light, the box said it simulates night time for them.

dont quote me on this, but im pretty sure that snkes can sense the light. If you buy a "Night Glow" from a pet store, whcih basically is just a black light, it says on the back..... Creates a Night time atmoshpere for you snake, so i guess they can, i know when i turn off my floresent and just my black light comes on, chong comes out and becomes VERY active, climbing the trees trying to get near the light and digging under the substrate, just havin a good time

How are you measuring your temps? Are you measuring at the substrate level or higher? Remember that bp's need some form of belly heat.

What is the most reccomended wattz for a light? * for a dome *

I mean, I realize that you have a new idea or whatever but think about this: A flourescent fixture that spans the cage isn't going to provide your snake the proper temperature gradient that it needs to thermoregulate. In english, that means that you need heat on one side of the cage, and cooler temps on the other. Your snake will choose which side to be on depending on whether it wants to get warm or cool off. Putting a flourescent strip prevents this from happening and is a bad idea. Theres a lot of successful keepers on here- when we say something isn't a good idea, its not a personal attack, its just that there are better methods that are much better for your snake.
