Do not use Nix it is not the same as Prevent-A-Mite. It can harm the animal. It has not been tested for reptile use and has not been approved for it. Please only use what is correct and healthy for your animal.

Provent-A-Mite or another product manufactured for reptiles are the only appropriate treatments for mites. Nix is made for human use with an entirely different species of pest. The dosages in Nix are much different than in PAM. They are not remotely the same medicine, and while I have heard of it used with some success, those using it were professional-level hobbyists and did the appropriate calculations to bring it to a reptile-safe level. PAM comes with reptile-specific, step by step instructions that, if followed, will wipe out mites with no repercussions on your animal.

Just get the family pack and have some for next time. (Hopefully next time doesn't happen)

NIX works awesome. All these people saying that PAM was made for reptiles needs to realize it wasn't. I don't remember the brand but if Skiploader finds this thread, he can explain much better. Basically PAM is a lice, flea, and mite spray used to kill them in general. Not for reptiles. It was rebranded for reptiles for someone to make a quick buck. NIX uses the same chemical to kill the mites as PAM does but PAM also has all sorts of bad chemicals in it as well. That's why you have to make sure it's dry and you don't smell it. A product with that many warnings doesn't sound safe to my animals IMHO. I have used nix twice and recommended it to people. It works like a charm and I have seen no ill effects with it. Everyone is free to do what they want and probably no one will listen to me (on this site seems nobody ever listens to anything I have to say) but all I can say is NIX works and I would happily recommend it to anyone.

What you do is mix the tiny bottle of NIX with one gallon of DISTILLED water. I'm not 100% why distilled but that's what I was told so I do it. You put that mix into the spray bottle.

Take a empty bin and put enough warm water in the bottom to cover the snake. Put a couple drops of dawn dish soap in there. Soak the snake to get the mites off the snake.

While the snake is soaking clean the bin/tank/cage and dry it off. Then spray the nix mixture all over it. Outside, inside, top, bottom. Everywhere. Let the water evaporate off.

Once the tank is dry, put paper towel in the bottom. It's easier to see the mites on it. Don't put the water dish in for a week or so. Mites like damp places and they could come back around the dish if it spills. Put the snake back in.

Wait a few weeks and repeat this process. I usually do it 3 times. So every 2 weeks for 6 weeks. Mites should be gone. This is what I do and it works. Just trying to help out a fellow herper. Hopefully this works for you.

They should come off in the soaking. Don't worry too much about it.

@ interloc finally some one else who actually realizes this about nix you should see other threads, where people try and argue against it. These are also the people who buy only the aspen bedding with a picture of a snake on it when the bigger cheaper bag with a hamster is the same thing .

To the OP you can buy it at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Riteaid, any drugstore will carry it.

Here is the proper mixture formula for nix so it won't harm anything this will also help you against the mites read it good. http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...ng+mites+Aaron

The part in bold. That statement is extremely off base considering most people on here use paper towels. IMO there is no reason to make a generalization like that.

As to the Nix usage. I have heard that use of Nix has caused multiple cases of neurological issues in snakes, and when I can find the links I will gladly post them and if I can not find them then I will admit me being wrong. Until I find a case study where it is proven to be wrong I will not use it on my animals nor will I endorse it at all. But like I said if I can not find the links after wake up then I will step up and say that I was wrong. Right now the only site I can think of that it was on is down for a bit so I will have to try tomorrow.

Works both ways dude. This is a video I saw of someone who used PAM incorrectly. The message should be here, use both products at own risk.

I think your taking what I said out of content and thought about it to much. I'm saying this because its a great comparison because it compares other lice treatments in a can just like PAM and people will only use PAM because some one was smart enough to slap some stuff on it about reptiles and market it to the community.

It's just like some one slapped a snake on some aspen bedding and sells its for 19 dollars a bag at petco and a bag 5 times as big with a hamster on it is 10 dollars. It was more of a comparison of how marketing works not a generalization. Again you thought to much into what I said.

I agree chemicals are chemicals it's not like your spraying rainbows and sprinkles out of either can.

To OP I would use distilled or filtered water, but that's me.

If you can find an example of this that does not involve someone applying it incorrectly, ie without diluting it and putting it directly on the animal, I would be very interested. I haven't seen any cases not involving mis-application. doesn't mean there aren't any though.

To the OP- Yes you need to use purified water of some sort, either distilled or RO( reverse osmosis) water. This is so you don't have any issues with other chemicals, like chlorine, that may be in your water at home. This could alter or negate the effectiveness of the treatment. Now this is only my opinion based on my experience, but I have had no problems with either Nix or PAM, and in fact needed to combine the use of the two to get rid of my really bad infestation. I treated the racks and tubs with the Provent-A-Mite, and treated the animals with the diluted nix solution. in my case neither was fully effective by itself, but I ended up having them really bad, which was my fault in the first place.

Ok I found what was looking for and I had read it wrong. The issues were caused by no pest strips and actually sad that Nix was a good treatment when used correctly. So I will admit that I am wrong.

Screw worm spray also works well. It is the same as Provent A Mite, and a lot cheaper.
