Successful MI - THEY'RE HATCHING!!! Now what?

Thanks to the good information from Quiet Tempest, I have eggs hatching right under mom. Some questions for anyone with experience... Should I get the little ones out ASAP? Might mom hurt them? Should I feed mom ASAP? Or will she be off feed for a while longer? I keep peaking in and the one baby head I can see doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get out of the egg, it's just sitting there with its nose in the air. Still, I don't know if I can just go off to sleep. Seems like I should keep an eye on them. By the way, this is my first clutch ever. Does it show? (It's BP mom's first clutch too).

Well, it's past midnight and no progress. Guess I'll go to bed. Why can't these things happen in the daytime? Anyway, mom seems to be doing a good job & I think everything will be ok overnight. Would still like to know if mama BP's going to be hungry right away. Goodnight. :)

Wish I could offer some advice, but I've never done maternal incubation.

Good idea! I'm charging my camera battery now. There wasn't much progress last night. This morning I still have just one little nose poking out. And sometimes he pulls his nose back in.

Got my battery charged and went to take a picture. The little guy had pulled his nose back in, so no picture yet. I'll get one asap.

That is so awesome.. Im going to breed eventually and maternal incubation sounds cool and I have never really seen it done before. Is it more risky then incubating in a incubator?

The expert on the subject is Quiet Tempest. She wrote a wonderful article that's a sticky under breeding. I'm so glad I went this way. It actually seems easier to me... let the mother do all the work. I really don't have much room in my tiny place for an incubator anyway. I have one, just in case, but it's small. Since this is my first breeding season and I have no experience with incubators, I don't think it was any more risky. Hope you give it a try & good luck to you. :)

BTW: I'm a nursing student...so when I saw "successful MI" I was very perplexed as to why A. you were excited and B. you had a "successful" heart attack (myocardial infarction is the medical term which is often abbreviated to MI) as opposed to an unsuccessful one. Just excuse me while I go sit in my nerd corner.

Wow so glad you had a successful maternal incubation! I definitely want to try it some time. Your pics are beautiful and so heart warming! Nothing is more beautiful than a big beautiful mommy taking care of her hatching eggs. You piebald is gorgeous btw! Big pretty mommy. Can't wait to see the babies when they decide to come out of the egg. Keep us posted :)

Well, guess I shouldn't have worried so much last night. Here it is nearly 24 hours later, and still all I have is a couple of heads poking out. :please: Can't wait to see what the morphs are!

As for what next, the babies will finish absorbing the rest of their yolk before coming out of their eggs so it may take a bit longer before you see what you've got. ;) For mom, you can offer food at any point during incubation when she's brooding. Sometimes they'll feed regularly and sometimes sporadically but if they're hungry, they'll still eat. At this point, though, I would wait to offer her food once the clutch has vacated the nest because now that the eggs have pipped they won't be shielding the hatchlings inside from being squeezed if mom is over eager with her meal.

Thanks! Just what I needed to know. Now I'll be more patient. It's been driving me crazy seeing their little heads for the last couple of days. But today ones body was next to the hole... It's Pied! So I got at least one. :)
