Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
HELP!!!!
i have a power outage right now, and my snake temps are down to 82 and 80!!!
Its only 10:00pm right now, so Im anticipating that the temps will drop even lower.
What should I do??
-
if theres no eggs and its snakes i wouldnt worry bro if its only a couple hours .. just keep lids on to contain heat u should be fine
-
I have him in a glass tank with a screen lid!!
theres no way to keep the heat in...
-
And it's underground equipment damage, so no idea when that's getting fixed
-
put the tank in the closet ... and if u get real worried take him out and let him wrap around ur neck or wrist and he will take heat from u
-
That's what I've been doing
Do you think he'll be ok over night??
-
Would a warm water bottle wrapped in a rag/towel work? I don't know, just throwing it out there!
-
thats about all u can do bro .. unless u got like a battery operated heater then just throw that in front of the tank other wise theres not much u can do
-
He's nosing around the tank looking for somewhere warm to go....I feel bad leaving him :(
I don't have any kind of heater, and I wouldn't want to hook him up to something unregulatable like a water bottle...
Is there something I can do to prevent this temp fluctuation in future outages??
-
Well, 82 isn't all that bad, one night shouldn't be bad at all. On another note, that's one of the reasons I bought a generator:)
-
Also, depending on what kind of vehicle you have, can you plug in an extension cord to your car and run the cord up to your tank? I did by an inverter that I can plug into my cigarette lighter that I can plug into the extension cord.
-
I'm not gonna be able to justify purchasing a generator for one snake. My folks simply wouldn't allow it :p
we see PGE trucks outside doing stuff in the road, so hopefully it gets fixed by tomorrow. Otherwise I'm going to have to find somewhere to plug his stuff in lol

Was the plug thingy cheap??
-
yo just buy i little battery operated heater u should be able to get one on ebay for under 20 bucks be ur best bet for the future

If you're talking about the inverter I think I got it for about $30 at Fred Meyer. You can probably get one at wally world as well.

Re: Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
A hot water bottle with a towel wrapped around it will be fine as long as the warmth can get through the towel and the snake can't touch the bottle if the water is very hot. I have had this happen in the past and used my thermometer to check water temp and started wrapping a towel around it until the temp was safe then cut off the extra and taped it so it wouldn't come off and did that to quite a few bottles and then cover the tank with another towel to trap the heat in. That is about the best you can do and just keep doing it until the power comes back on. If you have an electric water heater then you can warm water in a pan on a grill or if it is legal over a fire in a firepit. That is the best I can offer and I hope everything works out for you.
-
dam does everyone call it wally world i thought that was just a upstate thing lol
-
He's fine, really. Is this your weather report?
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...A#.Uh2Q1hY5Nj0
There's some danger if you're in the desert like I am, and the A/C is out, and the inside temps go above 100F for many hours. But he can go all the way down to 60F for a few hours and he'll be okay. 70F won't hurt him at all. Ball pythons are actually pretty tough critters.
-
(I don't even recommend the hot water bottle thing with those outside temps, because he's much, much more likely to burn himself on the bottle than he is to get sick from 70F.
If you were in Minnesota and it was winter time, THEN you'd want to start putting water bottles on top of the tank and wrapping the entire set-up in down comforters.)

Re: Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
I should add that when I did that it was the dead of winter back in 98/99 when we had a huge winter storm and everything was frozen. I should also add that doing what I said should only be done with low temps and in extreme situations, where they are right now there is no need.

Re: Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
if I read the post right. it's only one snake in a tank. if the power is going to be out for any length of time and it becomes a concern for you. take the one snake in it's tank to a friends house and plug in there.

Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
he'll be fine. big breeders take their snakes to shows for the weekend and leave them in the lobby where temps are 70-75ish for 2-3 days. if you're that worried, take him out and lay in bed for a while with him on your stomach.

Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
i'd be more worried about him getting too hot. it is august. if the house starts getting above 85-90 just take him to a friends/neighbors house if u can and plug him up.
-
This gives you a opportunity to cuddle for awhile ;)
BPs can deal with 70s it isn't ideal but they wouldn't have made it to the year 2013+ if they couldn't deal with some fluxuations.
Granted they aren't traped in glass boxes or plastic bins in Africa and left to the natural temps of a house.
looking at some graphs of temps and humidity of their countries
it isn't such a stable Hawaii 85° with a 90° hotspot all year.
-
Whoa guys. There is a whole lot of drastic measure being suggested here.
If the snake is between 60 and 90 degrees it'll be fine for days. I keep my snake room at 75 always.
-
The power came back on in the middle of the night, went back out, and came back on around 06:30am today.
Im having my Mom stop by in the early afternoon to check on the power, ad I'll be back around 2-3pm.
Thanks SOOOOoooo much for the suggestions...I'll know what to do next time :gj:

Good point. It would be different if the power were out for a week after a winter ice storm, or if the OP were incubating eggs.
Both scenarios are also why I have a generator and backup heating/cooling methods that don't rely on the power company as our infrastructure stinks, so I have to prep for the herps as well as for myself.

Re: Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
FWIW, It's a good idea to have an emergency heat source for winter, whether for your snake or yourself. Consider a small camping propane heater. You can buy them at walmart / hardware / sporting goods store. They also sell relatively inexpensive propane bottles that go with them, and they store "indefinately". If you have a gas grill, you can use the 20lb. tank in a pinch with the right hose to convert it.
My little propane heater has sat collecting dust for several years now, but it's a peace of mind thing, and might save your snake in a winter storm.

Re: Help urgently!!!!! Power outage!!!!!!!
A great emergency measure is to keep a dozen hand warmers available in a drawer somewhere. Pop one or two, wrap in a couple layers of towel because they do get over 100 degrees and place in the cage. The snake will cuddle up between them. Just watch the temps. These are good for several hours and take just a minute to change out if you need to. Also the hot water in a bottle trick woks IF you have a gas stove top with which to heat it.
-
I keep a case of shipping heat packs in my reptile room. They're good for 40 hours.
-
I keep an APC battery backup charged for power outages.

I would like to just make sure that everybody remembers that proportional thermostats don't work properly on generators/inverters/battery backups.
Some are better than others, such as the honda pure sine wave generators, but most deliver very poor quality power that interferes with proportional thermostats control circuitry.
If you have/are considering purchasing one of these for use with snakes and you use a proportional thermostats a cheap on/off style thermostat such as a hydrofarm should also be on your list of things to buy.
