Ban to All Exotics
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/pet...-nepa/mG3FW7Sq
Well, it takes 100,000 signatures to get an official remark from the White House. Lets make it happen guys, 99,000 more to go.
-
45 views 45 signatures right?

I signed. Aggressively promoting it on Facebook as well... I have to say I'm kind of shocked big breeders aren't pushing this on their pages and sites... The small breeders I contact tend to answer me and put it up but the big ones don't- but I know they see my messages... I don't get it; it's your livelihood..
-
Thanks! Yeah, I'm a little shocked too. I tweeted the petition link to USARK so maybe they'll throw it out.

I signed!
The government is just getting out of hand >.<

Although an online petition is an okay idea, a paper and pen petition is way better. Congress will pay more attention to a hand written petition of 200 signatures as opposed to 10,000 signatures online.
-
I totally agree with that Pyhtonminion!
Unfortunately for me I don't have enough time to go out and tell people to sign a petition, especially since around my neighborhood they don't really enjoy snakes, even though this doesn't really effect just reptiles. I'm sure that somebody will have to voice it around my county, since, once again, it's not just snakes and reptiles. Yet I'm, only 15 and I don't really have the luxury of driving around yet x3

At 100,000 signatures the white house vows to review the petition and material and make an "Action" where they "do something". So, I disagree with you there, but I appreciate the insight.
This is just another avenue, keep sending emails to congress members and all that jazz. It was just an idea the popped into my head, I hadn't seen anything like a white house petition (I also searched their petitions to make sure!) and nothing came up. So, I went ahead and did it.
-
Well I'm sure glad you did, and it should be helpful :gj:

I commend your diligence on the matter, however I see a fatal flaw with this concept...
If I wanted to start a petition, I make an account, write one up, and post it on the White House website, and share it with my friends.
200 other concerned citizens get the bright idea as well and write one up for themselves.
So now there are 201 petitions with the same goal in mind, but the 100,000 signatures needed are spread between these 200 petitions.
So unfortunately there are 200 petitions with only 500 signatures each and the legislators don't take a second look at it, if they even took a first to start with.
We need a political group to act as a head for the cause, and everyone hops on that bandwagon to make each signature count that much more.
I appreciate you doing your part to try and protect the hobby that we all love so much tho.
Good luck to you and all of us ;)

I tweeted the petition to USARK, some sound backing would eliminate your logical outcome.

We've got 20, now. Everybody is sharing, right?
There's a lot more than 20 views, which is a shame. I thought this would go over better.

Forgot to throw this out there, I'm signer #16.

Signed #24 and shared on FB.

Keep it up guys! I'm going to do a bit more aggressive promoting tomorrow.
-
At SEWERfest today, they were having people in line sign a petition for this same thing. I thought it was a great idea to get signatures at something like this. My boyfriend and I both signed at SEWERfest. I'll sign this one too, as soon as the website will let me. It says I have to sign up for an account before I can sign the petition.
-
I also just posted it on a facebook ball python group I belong to.
-
Signed - #32. 894 views. It's insane how many people have read this and just moved on....

951 now, crazy.

It's incredible how far the government will go to remove our freedoms in our "free" country!

So there is already a petition for the same thing going on? Does the other one you signed have more signatures and is there a link to that petition?

They physically signed a personal petition at a show, so there probably won't be a link to it. This however is a white house petition that, if it garners enough votes, will be reviewed by the white house. That's the incentive for using their website.
So, you can "sign" that one. But, it'll just be provided to someone who will not get it all the way (fingers crossed) across Obama desk.

I understand that but maybe its posted on a website with information about them pushing the petition and getting signatures.
Also if there was a website or something to contact that person you could have them send people to yours. :gj:

#45. I posted it on my facebook aswell. It took me less than five minutes to do. Come on guys we need more signatures

So what exactly is the proposed legislation that you are wanting to prevent? I know what you said our "opposition's" goal is but is it in a formal HR or something yet?
-
It's a categorical exclusion under NEPA, which would allow USFWS to not have to create any HRs and add whatever whenever to the Lacey Act.

Ah, I was in a bit of a hurry last night, but I signed as well, amongst other things. Letting something this preposterous get through would be insane. It's sad to see that parts of the government are focusing on trivial things like our harmless pets instead of trying to do any real, helpful work. *sighs*
-
I get that, but what is the exclusion being filed under? Where is it being filed? By whom? When will it be filed?
-
http://ceq.hss.doe.gov/ NEPA, or the National Environmental Protection Act, the exclusion would give the USFWS (the United States Federal Wildlife Service, who is wanting the exclusion) the full control of what animals (any at all) they deem necessary to add to the Lacey Act to "create harmony between man and nature" by stating constricting snakes are a detriment to natural wildlife.
As for when? I believe it's the end of this month before we go before a committee which will decide yea or nay on whether they can continue in their efforts to get the exclusion.
Where? Well, I imagine Washington D.C. because this is a federal enactment. No citizen is exempt from the rules they create if they win.

Thank you for explaining and providing the link. Scary stuff. I'm familiar with NEPA and I didn't realize that the USFWS themselves were applying. Do you know if USARK is doing anything to fight this at present?

And I wasn't trying to call you out or sharpshoot you. I knew that you knew and I was curious. Thanks again.

No worries! I wish I would've thought out more my information in the petition itself. Yeah, USARK was promoting some email and snail mail drives to get the word to your rep. in the federal legislature about opposing it should it make it out of committees.

We physically signed the petitions, and I believe it was organized by the Madison Area Herpetological Society: http://madisonherps.org/
I could not find any further information on both their website and on their forum.
Just a thought...I know we don't want multiple petitions out there for the same thing, but it might not be a bad idea to look at some of the petition sites like Change.org or moveon.org. I am constantly getting requests to sign petitions for things similar to this and they reach a lot of people everyday.
-
I'm gonna be upset if the gecko community I posted the petition to gets more signatures than we could.

I signed it even though it would now appear futile...

Re: Ban to All Exotics
I have signed this petition as well as doing all the USARK things, such as contacting the USFWS in four different manners and contacting our Senator. I have also retweeted USARK's tweets, tweeted this petition and used our Facebook for this petition and USARK's links. We're just starting to get our hobby/business off the ground and hope to someday turn our love for reptiles and the hobby into a full business. It kills us to see that threatened in a country that, "you have the freedom to follow whatever dreams you have." Just our .02 cents.

P.S.
Thank you to everyone who is helping fight for our hobby!
