Animal Planet shows are really all fake???
So I was over my friend Joes house, and I brought up how I love the Turtleman show. He then says its fake. And that most of the shows on Animal Planet are faked. I was like "WHAAAAATT???" He then tells me that they discussed it on Reptile radio a bit ago....That Animal Planet found him on youtube catching turtles, and they made him a show deal. AP made him sign a contract that he was not allowed to fix his teeth, and can not discuss the show with anyone. Said they also talked about Gatorboys, and how that's all completely staged too....all those "rogue gators" were farmed ones that were placed, and then filmed to look like Gatorboys were catching it and removing it from the property. Is this really true??? Imma cry my lil eyeballs out....say it isn't sooo....:(

Yeah, there's a thread in pet laws about a town suing him for not having the permits to release a venomous snake and recatch it, portraying the town in a negative light.

Sorry Wes, (blonde moment)....I had to have my husband explain that one to me :P

Turtleman is a pathetic fake and a fraud. We have enough of a fight as it is with trying to keep our reptiles without someone feeding the fears of the general public who don't know any better and will often believe the scary storys being fed to them as "reality". It really crossed the line to me when he claimed to have found and caught two cotton mouths out of a public swimming pool, outside of their natural range, where they don't exist at. Nice way to scare the public through lies and show them what a dangerous and invasive species snakes are.

Re: Animal Planet shows are really all fake???
I have some really bad news for you.
Wrestling is fake too. And, so are three quarters of the fishing or hunting shows.
That said I still watch re-runs of River Monsters and Steve Irwin. Say what you will about either personally or any fakery, one thing comes through and that is an awe, love and respect for the wild world around us. Plus I get to see some wicked and interesting animals I may never otherwise see.
-
I always figured the term Reality TV to a type of oxymoron.

Reality shows are in fact staged. There was a behind the scenes done on a few shows, notably The Simple Life and one of the house wives shows. The "real people" were fed lines and well before shooting different scenarios were thought up. Otherwise it would be an hour long show of them shopping.
-
Then Kraken is far older than yer modern movies! The Kraken is ancient and forever...Aye, she be a mystery...

Gatorboys is fake?
Some of the personal stuff seems staged or re-enacted but im cool with that.
Not cool if they release and recapture and paint a BS story.

Re: Animal Planet shows are really all fake???
Reality TV is as real as WWF. The bottom line is they are cheap to produce and they are staged. I believe Irwin was the real deal. But now everything is modeled after his sort of in your face style, and the only way that is possible is to fake it. The bottom line is to keep you watching. If your not watching, the sponsers aren't getting their products looked at.
It's entertainment not reality.
-
Reality-style shows are all fake to some extent. I would say River Monsters is the only show on AP not faked. Survivrorman wasn't faked. And of course, the old documentary style shows like Croc Hunter and Jeff Corwin were not faked.
-
Almost all of those newer shows are faked, to what extent is what varies. Think about it like this: would they really sit with somebody for 8+ hours everyday just to get action? No. They stage stuff so that way all we see is the action. It's a shame but how many people would really watch a show if there was no action. Nobody, because it would put them to sleep. Now many shows way kill it with action so it looks obviously fake. Then other shows like River Monsters may have fake parts, but for the most part it was actually real.
I used to like lizard kick towing, because it was funny, though I knew it was fake it was still ok. Then they just stepped to a new level of fake and the show became really stupid.

MonsterQuest? Just guys building traps and elaborate contraptions to trap/kill something that doesn't exist. Nothing ever happens...
But I digress, people still watch it.

Re: Animal Planet shows are really all fake???
I know that when Steve Irwin did his shows, the camera crew would follow him around for hours, even days, until he came across animals, and then they would start filming. Thats REAL. I think thats the case with River Monsters too. But to have a show, thats 100% made up and fake, it loses its charm and enertainment value when you find out its 100% made up. As for wrestling, it will never lose its entertainment value...fake or not. Even faked, those wrestler guys still do get hurt.

Yeah...I'm not sure how you "fake" a fishing show. You can certainly edit it to cut out all the dinkers they catch and only show the bigger fish, but I wouldn't call that "fake"...unless they have scuba divers down there hooking the fish on. And I'm sure Bill Dance fishes on what mostly seems like private (well stocked) ponds and lakes...again, not really faked, just trying to make for good tv...
I always just assume anything called a "reality show" is automatically not real...
edit: and I've never thought of River Monsters as a reality show...more of an entertainment/documentary type of show...

Re: Animal Planet shows are really all fake???
I hate to break it to you but the older shows were often faked too.
Even back in the day of Gerald Durrel they were releasing glass lizards off camera for him to find and catch on camera.

One of my employees dad is Italo Labignon of Canadian Sportfishing. I was on the show when I was a pre-teen. There's definitely heavy heavy editing done but fishing shows are not fake.

Lol, most of what you people are saying maakes me glad I stopped watching tv a few years ago. the internet was more fun and informative, once you sift through the trash. from what little I see and what i hear, tv is now mostly trash. every time i try to watch something the wife or kid is watching, I usually end up walking away shaking my head. Oh well, back to the collection of Star Trek episodes i guess.

really though, I don't much care if they edit the footage to make it look like the reptiles are being found very 5 minutes. When I watch a show like that I don't really watch to see "I wonder what the actual animal density of the area being explored is...I think they're pasting the clips together." In the hunting and fishing aspect, it doesn't matter to me again how long it's shown on air that they look for the animal; even in a stocked private lake crappy fishermen don't get fish and crappy hunters don't get big bucks.
What would bother me would be releasing the animals offscreen to be caught, etc. that's why I feel so sad when I hear about these kinds of things, because it really drops the "reality" of everything.
While we're discussing this, does anyone know if pawn stars is faked too?? My faith in them, American Pickers, and Ice Road Truckers had been shaken due to the revelation of the Animal Planet stuff...

Pawn stars is most certainly a fake. You cannot go in the store and see any of those guys working. They only come down to film episodes and everything is set up. They choose which people with which stuff can come in, an then they act.
The store really exists, and they really are a pawn shop, but the people you see on tv are basically prescreened actors with pre approved merchandise.

Or Finding Bigfoot...I love that show, it's the best new comedy on TV in years! Especially the episode they filmed over near Knoxville TN when they brought in the hog callers to try to help lure in a squatch...and there was also the guys story about the young one he saw on his picnic table outside that beeped at him...that one had me in tears laughing at them so hard.

What I love the most is when Animal planet is playing Horror movie music while zoomed in on a baby red tail sliding through the grass while the commentator talks like this 2 foot snake could easily devour a grown man whole

I really miss how old Animal Planet was, where they showed real educational documentaries on certain animals or certain ecosystems... I grew up on that. Tried to watch it again recently, and nothing but freaking reality shows and ones that totally aren't related... like treehouse builders.
