dad came by the house today and wanted to see the retic because he hadnt really seen him since i got him. he was amazed at how much my little worm had grown. we got him february 16th, so just a little over 5 months ago. i havent fed him like breeders usually do that want to get them up to size quicker. just one meal, a little larger than his girth, every sunday. he's only refused food one time while he was deep in shed, but every other time he's eaten right through his shed cycles. just goes to show how quick these guys grow. but the bigger he gets, the more i love him. i can definitely see myself getting a couple more of these eventually when i have more room.

Today: i know he's a little longer than me so he's at least 6 feet now. maybe a couple inches longer.

thanks. lol and he's a mainland so he's gonna be a big boy. the bigger he gets the more you can see the purple in him. i love it. they dont brown out like balls do so when he's 12 feet he's gonna look pretty as ever. i need to get some good quality pictures of him out in the sunlight. these pictures do his colors no justice.

oh i cant wait to see how much he's grown after a full year. it fascinates me how any animal can start out so tiny and end up so huge. lol and funny thing is, i could really care less about albino BPs, but i love the albino retics.

they're fascinating snakes. more personality than any other snake i've kept. and man do they love their food. lol getting one as a baby is the way to go. so many people get scared out of them because of how big they get, but if you've wanted a big snake for a while and have kept your share of snakes before, i say go for it. if you get one as a baby, you get the reward of raising it from just a little handful to something truly awe-worthy. you also really learn to "read" your snake, which is very necessary with these guys. with him, as long as i can tell whether he's in food mode or chill mode i'm good. he's already pretty hook trained. i can knock him out of food mode pretty quickly now just by rubbing right behind his head with the hook. then i just reach in and pick him up. i started "hook training" him as soon as i got him and it took a little while for him to realize the hook meant no food, probably 2-3 months, but once they get the hang of it it's very nice. he's been such a pleasure to keep, i'm going to be really sad if they get added to the lacey act. i'd love to try and breed them one day, and i have no intentions of living in tennessee the rest of my life. lol

a little off topic, but I know these guys can reach up to 16ft, but how wide do their bodies get? Do they stay some what skinny?

Love it! It's the snake I really can't own but wish I could. I just have to be realistic and leave it at that. I love them maybe the most of the constrictors although my boa is pretty fricking cool.

I am happy good, responsible people like you own and show these guys off like they deserve to be.

Keep the pics coming. I lurk in the python forums now and then.

I also like the Papuan pythons.

    You have a beauty there!!

yeah retics are the skinny guys of the "giants." i haven't owned any that size yet so i can't say for sure, and it also really depends on how heavily you feed them. but shooting from the hip, i'd say a 14-16 footer that was fed moderately would be about as round as a softball. i don't expect this guy to hit 16 feet. the breeder said his parents were on the smaller size for mainlands, but even if he does, he's not goin anywhere. lol

Retics are skinny, but softball is a bit off... A male at 16' if fed properly and healthy should be around the thickness of a 2 liter bottle or so. Females larger of course.. Burm on the other hand will be that same thickness at 13-14' LOL.

My males at around 12' are softball size in thickness. Females bigger.

Very nice. I would get one if it weren't for the adult size. I want a green anaconda so bad because I think it's probably one of the most beautiful natural morphs, but the size.

Look into dwarf/superdwarf stuff... Some of it stays smaller than even a boa will ever get, and you still get the awesome personalities and such ;)
