Well what are your breeding plans?

There are a ton of morphs under $500, but we kind of need to know what you're looking for.

a female bumblebee would add two new genes to your collection. or a female fire. fire makes everything better.

    Re: What to get?
Definitely a female since not every girl will go every year. In addition to the lesser and bumblebee there are plenty of enchi's in your price range on Fauna, some even from 2012 so they have a little size to them.

None of the females is het for anything.

Yeah! A bunch of normal-looking hets! As if we didnt have enough of that!

Lets be serious.... So you have 3 females, and one male. You want to breed for fun, to advance your hobby, to expand the collection, or just to experience breeding them. Breeding is a lot of work, surely it would be nice if the hatchlings can easily be sold?

If you breed your male to your 3 females, it will be a lot of work, it will cost a lot of time, and if it works you get plenty of normals, a decent amount of mojaves, a few fires, and with luck a fire mojave.

My suggestion is to work with the 3 females you have, and get your budget up as high as you can, at least 1000+, and get a true powerhouse male. If you get a male with 3 different codominant genes that are nice on their own, or a male with super pastel + 2 other genes, breeding will be much more fun. The offspring will sell easily and you will get nice holdbacks. The clutches will look diverse and have lots of different combos in them. And, if you manage to get decent prices for some of the cool stuff you produce, after all the work there will be a little financial reward at the end that can reimburse you for the cost of the 1000+ dollar male, the cost of the incubator, and the cost for food and electricity and water.

So i would say: Get something like maybe a pewter bee (cinnamon + pastel + spider), or a lesser killer bee (lesser + super pastel + spider). Or a jigsaw blast (mojave + pinstripe + pastel). Male of course. Breed it to all 3 females you have. Use the mojave male as a backup breeder, if your new male fails to lock up then just use your current male.

If you really only have 500 dollars to spend and the 4 BPs you currently have, and want to breed, i would say forget about getting another one. Invest the 500 dollars into what you need, like an incubator, a hatchling rack / enclosures for hatchlings, or save it, and breed what you currently have. Maybe breed the mojave only to your fire female, maybe breed it to all 3 females.

Get serious with breeding when you can get breeder-quality animals to breed, that will produce hatchlings that easily sell, and that will produce holdbacks that you will want to keep because they look so awesome, or because you got something new you never had before. (other than fire mojave).

For 500, you could get a nice female breeder, which only makes sense if you have at least one genetically powerful male, which you do not have. And currently you cannot really use your two normal females. They are an asset, but fire x normal will not get you far. Right now you need to take the step and go for a 1000-1500 dollar male with the intent of breeding it to all 3 females.

Touche pythonfriend. The mojave and one of the female normals are 50% PH pied. So i was debating if i should take my chances or replace the mojave with a more powerful breeder. Like a lemon blast for fire lemon blasts. Or maybe a pastel yellowbelly or just keep my eyes peeled for a 3 gene male. Im not in a rush as only the two normals will be reasy to breed this year.

Sound advice, pythonfriend!! Alexr, what do you have so far by way of equipment? Are you fully prepared or still need to pick up some gear along the way? I think that will have the greatest impact on your budget.

6 slot v 70 rack and a mini fridge and spare thermostat waiting to turn it into an incubator. and as soon as my female(s) lay, i will build a hatchling rack. wont take but a few days.

You should not peek at 3 gene stuff you maybe can get if you get a 2-gene male and breed it to your 1-gene female, and the 2 normals.

You should get a 3-4 gene male or a super + 1-2 gene male and breed that to your 3 females. And get fancy clutches, even from the normals.

You can breed for fun with what you have. Even if you buy a powerhouse male hatchling for 1500 dollars now, you should breed what you have before your powerhouse male is ready, for one season of experience.

Het pieds tend to have markers, so i would not bet on that. The way to cheaply but effectively start a recessive project is to get a visual male, and between 2 and 5 females that are all 100% het, or visual, for clutches that contain 100% hets, and visuals. 66% possible hets do not sell well. and breeders, when selling, give 50% possible het away as a bonus or charge little for it, some even disregard it and do not forward the information.

Double gene male for sure. Keep your current stock and save up for a nice double gene male. A 1.0 Firefly is not out of reach and neither is a Nuclear (Butter Fire).

Bred to your 0.1 Fire you could get some Super Fires, Fireflys, Nuclears, Butters and Pastels- depending on which male you choose.... all desirable.

Think of a strong gene then throw a simple Pastel or Fire to it.... that is your starter powerhouse male you need to save for.

    Nuclear
    Firefly
    Enchi Pastel
    Enchi Fire

Down the road I would go to a show and pick up as many 0.1 Pastels as you can swing. Throw any of the males above at a $75- $100, 0.1 Pastel when she is breedable and see what you come up with.

    Good article:

Awesome, sounds like you're just about ready! I can't wait til I get my butt into gear and breed (and get my females to weight!!). When are you expected to start your first pairing?

thats why i thought of gettin a spinnerblast hatchling thatll be ready next year to breed with the fire. Because even if i dont hit the firefly spinner, there will be a few other nice possibilities. Does that sound like a solid idea?

    Re: What to get?
you don't have any morphs that worth much. more at breeding size. so I would get a very nice male super pastel and a nice female pastel or 2. the super to your fire will produced fireflies and pastels no normals. super pastel to pastel get pastel and superpastels. hold back all the female super pastels and fireflies. you need to start building a female morph base up. having nice pastel in your collection from the beginning is a great start. then with what you don't keep, you could sell or trade for other morphs you would like to work with. pastel is in sooooo many combos. breed the male Mojave to a normal to produce some female mojaves.

if you decide to go with something else, by the time you breed the timing could be against you. think about building up on females. the pastel is just one example. but a good one.

That sounds good, and if you get a spinnerblast, go bold and breed it to all 3 females. That will make bees, pastels, lemonblasts, maybe even another spinnerblast (this combo can copy itself even when bred to a normal), spiders, pinstripes. And few normals even when breeding to a normal female. And with the fire female, all i said + fire.

I personally dont like spider so much, but it still is one of the most powerful genes and others love it. Your choice is good. It really makes sense.

Ok cool. What other 2 or 3 gene do you think would go good with a fire that wasnt mentioned and is in the 4-600 price range?
