How many of you guys tried probing your brb? How deep did it go? I tried probing mine, it goes down 4 sub-caudal scales. Is it really a female or a male?

Relax, it only looks like that because it's healing. She just shed. The tail had necrotic tissue on the tail from the previous owners neglect.
OP, keep her enclosure cleeean! I would second a vet, but I know that's not an option in your area right now, so her getting infected isn't an option for you! Treat her right! :) :gj:

I understand, but the snake needs something on it to stop that open wound from getting infected!!!

I agree. And I know the OP was advised in the previous thread to walk away, but if there are no vets in his area, I honestly feel better about the animal being in his care, than the care of the owner who put her in this situation. At least the OP wants to try and fix this.

I have had a severly injured snake, actually i still have her and shes doing great. When she shed all her wounds opened up and looked like that. The vet did nothing for us, actually might have made it worse, we then consulted the reptile vet from the local zoo and he referred us to our friend who runs the local reptile store. So yea vet is not always the best anyway. I agree keep her cage sterile and see if you cant get ur hands on some antibiotics to prevent infection. Maybe consult a vet on the phone if physically visiting one is not an option. But like I said in my situation the vet did nothing and I can get all the meds I need through my friend.

What deal did you work out for the snake?

Thanks! Now, has anyone of you tried probing a brb? How deep does it go if its a female?

Brazilian rainbow boa are difficult to sex based on visible external differences until they are about three years old. Young ones can be sexed by probing. Females will probe a distance of two to four subcaudal scales and males will probe to a depth of eight to twelve subcaudal scales. They can also be sexed by palpitation or popping. All three methods require someone experienced in sexing snakes. Adult males have substantially larger spurs along the side of the vent and also have noticeably thicker bases of their tails due to the invaginated hemipenes. After about eight years of age the heads of both sexes are noticeably larger than on nearly similar sized young adults. This phenomenon of the enlarged head on older animals seems to be more pronounced on red and orange animals than on brownish specimens. This phenomenon also occurs with older Peruvian rainbow boas.
This is from here: http://rainbows-r-us-reptiles.com/Ca...ainbow_Boa.htm
So I guess the deal did not work out in your favor. Its good you rescued it but I think you are moving to fast. Let the snake heal up before you start trying to sex it. The sex does not mater at all right now. Forget about breeding and condensate on its health.

So it means its a feamale? Because when i probed her, it goes down up to 4 sub-caudal scale. Im not planning on breeding her this year. Maybe next year, if i found a male that is being sold near my place.

Cool, glad it is getting better!!! I would love to see a picture of her whole body too :D
