Wet Towels for humidity

For those of you who keep a damp towel on top the cage to help increase humidity, Do you need to replace the towel or can you keep rewetting it?

Do You have to worry about anything bad growing on the towel or is it okay for a while?

Is the cage a screen top? Replacing it or just moving the towel around is necessary to prevent rusting if it is. That's what I do!

Depends. Are you having to soak them completely or just moisten them and ring them out? If you're taking them off everyday to get them wet, they'll be fine for 2-3 weeks before you even have to consider growth. Once they start getting harder and crinkly I change them out--trust me, you'll be able to tell when this is.

Hmm... at the moment I've just been spraying the bottom (currently using a big towel thats folded) with a spray bottle... so I haven't gotten it wet enough to need to wring it out... but I'm still having trouble keeping the humidity up so I may have to try that

I say cover the screen with foil or foil tape, add moss to the hides to create humid hides, mist appropriately.

I did this and my sheds have been great ever since.

During non shed I mist the moss and let it dry back out. During a shed I soak the moss and keep it damp through the shed process.

If I used foil how covered would I cover it? I obviously have to leave space for airflow and I have a infrared lamp for ambient heat on it

When i used a tank i had clear plastic wrap over the towel and had enough so it would stick to the glass for max coverage.
Soak that towel and wring it enough to where it is heavy but not dripping.
As was said about rust...it will happen, if you are able to pick up another top and clear coat it with rustolium you can avoid it. Though if you take that route make sure you leave it outside to dry (i left mine out for 2 weeks then washed it) gotta ensure no chemical smell or anything of that sort.

The house humidity was like in the low 20's
I kept my humidity at 65 in the cold upstate ny 80 yearold home in a 18x18x28 tall tank that was meant for lizards :oops:

I cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the screen frame. I then cut a window for my che and lamp. I covered the cardboard with foil and used clear packing tape to secure it.

I have the sliding style top.

I'm currently using a hand towel which I wet in the sink and wring out once in the morning, once before bed. Mold shouldn't be a problem for awhile if you use this method, though eventually it will need washing. Are you using a glass tank? That's what I put my new BP in and I am seriously considering moving him to a tub. My CaliKing doesn't have the humidity issues like my BP does. I have ordered a heavier duty UTH for my boy as suggested by people on the forum since balls don't technically need a daytime/nighttime light (they live in termite mounds naturally) and belly heat helps them digest. I've heard that if you can keep the tank up to the proper temps with just an UTH, humidity is much less of a concern (those lamps dry out the air, fast.) You might give that a try. I used foam board to insulate the cage on three sides, as well, and that's helped keep my cage temp up with a lower level watt red bulb.

Oh, and as for the lamp, I only cover the 3/4 of the cage the lamp doesn't sit on. This leaves room for air to circulate as well.

Where does your lamp sit? Do you have any pics of your setup? Ours sound similar, I'd love to see how you have yours set up, what substrate so you use?
