Feeding Breeder Cost

I was curious how much most of you pay a year to feed a breeder? Also how much does it cost to raise a hatchling up to a year?

That's going to vary a lot based on local feeder prices/how often you feed/and what type of rodents you get.

I'd say in very general terms it will cost about $100 per year.

Being able to buy in bulk might get that number down. Especially if you spend more on a larger amount of snakes.

This is about right. Figure $2 a rat 52 weeks in year. That equals $104 if you feed weekly and they eat every week that is.

My number always evolve but I can tell you that by comparing the number of feeders produced and the price of the supply I buy the average is about $0.50 per feeder produced (I produce several thousands each each year) of course this only include the material I do not include my time.

Yea and (for most balls) you can pretty much cut that by like 20% right off the bat because most go off feed for various reasons throughout the year lol.

I breed my own rodents, this cost me about $200 a month to keep them going.
I try to sell at least $200 in rodents so when I sell more than the cost I'm doing good.

For those of you that buy and not breed. Where do you buy your rats? And Thanks for the info!

I buy from reptile shows if I can, if I'm hurting for some feeders I go to one of the local feed/pet shops. For me, it's just not worthwhile to order online.

Breeding our own rodents makes the cost a lot lower. On average, it's costing about $.30 per small. That's with us feeding them the rodent block feed we get from our local Farm supply store. We're feeding about 25 breeder females, 5 breeder males, and 15-30 babies typically. We've just built another 8 tubs for rats to up our production, so we may make some of our cost back by selling extra rats.

Buying rats to raise a baby male to a breeder size within a year would typically cost $50-$100, depending on local costs of rats. You need to remember that for the first few months, you're not feeding them smalls...

2 bucks a rat must be nice. anywhere in my town i can buy feeder rats they are $5 plus. that can get ridiculously expensive when u have 15 snakes to feed. $75 a week (if they all eat). thats $300 a month if i bought feeders from my local pet store. luckily we found a rat breeder here that sells us them for a buck a pop. just started breeding our own. not producing enough to keep up with what we need yet, but still saving us a little. plus its neat to see the rat breeding process and baby rats grow up.

Rodent Pro its a bit high on shipping due to the dry ice and insulation but they are relatively low priced and great quality.

I bought 50 weaned rats for 1.50 each + about 25 for shipping from lyane labs. So it was a hundred bucks for about a years worth of food. They charge 1.65 each for 50 small rats and that's what I'll be getting next.

I know two local guys that breed both snakes and rats.
I buy from them because not having to clean up after rats is worth it to me.

I buy from reptile shows, but I'm going to look at finding a local breeder! :)
