Can somebody tell me what this is?
Saw it in front of someones door. It's cool. I want one. What is it? O.o

Good question. Looks dangerous.
-
I know it's organic, it came off of a fish or something. Other than that, idk.
-
Bill off a sawtooth shark. Its nose.

Can somebody tell me what this is?

Thank you! While eating dinner, my dad beat you to telling me, though.
Now I'm determined to catch one, cut off it's nose, and eat it.
Yum.

Hard to catch
have to snag them with massive treble hooks; they won't take bait or lures.

:O
You have crushed my dreams. Thanks.
-
They are catchable; I just think you have to be in the south to get em
-
Turns out they're almost extinct. :( I guess I'll be leaving the big guys alone

Like catfish noodling. You gotta noodle them
-
That's some dangerous noodling.
And this is actually from a sawfish, not a sawshark.
-
Ditto to what's already been said, they are critically endangered. I know we have them in FL, but I have never seen one. FL Fish and Wildlife has posters up at boat ramps asking people to report sightings and stuff, though, so they are there.
-
Very cool looking saw. I found this and read up a bit, sounds like an interesting fish.

Re: Can somebody tell me what this is?
That thing is cool!!!! I don't think I'd try noodling that...

River monsters had a sawfish episode... I believe he caught one on hook and line in Australia.

I love river monsters. That's where my dad knew them from. I must have missed that episode, though. I'll have to go back and find it.

Re: Can somebody tell me what this is?
Sawfish are fascinating and beautiful. They swim very fast into a school of small fish, swing their nose left to right very quickly to wound/stun some fish, then they eat at their leisure. Beautiful creature.

Hey, if that guy just had it propped up in a corner on top of a stack of lumber maybe you can offer him 20 bucks for it and see what he says? Maybe he doesn't care and just wants to get rid of it. If I had something like that it would be hanging on my wall.

Agreed! I'd just make sure it's legal to own first :)

Everything is legal to own...
As long as nobody knows ;)
On a more serious note, nothing is legal to own anymore... :(
-
I would really love to own it. Looking up the laws, I couldn't find anything from an 'official' site, but word on the street is that they're only legal if they have documentation proving that they were harvested before 2003. 2003 is when the law went into effect that made them illegal to posses. (in the US) Any before then are grandfathered in.
That being said...idk...this is just something some dude picked up. You should have seen the rest of the yard....covered in antiques and old junk. I'm thinking maybe they just found in in an auction lot or something.
Honestly, I believe it to be vintage. I plan on inquiring about it, and if he'll give it to me cheap, I'll see what can be done about getting the documentation. :)
-
The River Monsters that features them was very good. They are really interesting fish. If I were you, I'd contact my local wildlife management and ask them about it. Tell them you found it at an antique store and want to buy it. They should be able to tell you if you can or not.

Down here in Florida there is a program that requires you to notify fwc if you catch one and give them its stats. It's so they can track them and try to get a rough idea of how many we have in the area. They've been caught frequently at Sebastian Inlet, Florida.
-
Sent out an email to our fish and wildlife department. Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Can somebody tell me what this is?
Semi off topic here, but I watched an episode (pretty sure it was River Monsters) the other day where the guy caught a freaking huge stingray. I couldn't believe the size of it.
-
ALriiight talked to a Lt. on the phone in the F&W department, and he said I was all good. :D So my nose is clean. If I was ever to get in any trouble, I'll just go point at him, haha.

Yeah, the dude catches giant fish. Some of them are absolutely ridiculous.

He is the only show that is on animal planet that I will watch, although he ha caught just about all the real "monsters" so his recent episodes aren't as exciting. Still, his first couple of seasons are on Netflix, and they are sweet!

Okay, going to inquire about it now...I really hope he'll sell it to me for $20-40. I'm seriously doubting it, considering it's worth $1000. Still...
I have to try, right?

You never know if you don't try. :)

Follow up:
Well, sadly, I am not home with an awesome fish nose.
Nice story, though.
The guy who has it is a single dad who works machinery at the local landfill. He's kinda a junk hog, but he picks up some really cool stuff. This wound up in a load of junk dumped into the dump 4 years ago. He fished it out, looked up what it was, and took it home. It's been inside up until 3 weeks ago, when he set it out by the door for no particular reason. (I think he was rearranging stuff inside) He really didn't want to sell it, but he didn't know what it was worth, either (It's a 53 inch sawfish nostrum in very good condition, worth at least $1000, if not more.) After I was sure he wouldn't sell it (but he was SUPER nice about it) I told him what it was worth, and then all about the sawfish. He was really curious, and absolutely amazed. I definitely made his day. :o) He's taking it inside, and is going to mount it. I feel good about going back, even if I didn't get to buy it. Him and his son are over the moon, haha. Plus now he knows that if he ever falls on hard times (which is sounds like that might happen with him from time to time) he has something to fall back on.
So, hey, I did my good deed of the day! :D

A little late on this reply, but I actually owned one of those fish. Actually I've owned almost all the fish he's caught on the show lol.
That big guy, in the picture, at the time I owned one, I was like 1 of only 12 or so people in the US that owned one.
Awesome fish

That's awesome!! :D I knew they could be big fish, but not THAT big (that's nearly as tall as I am!! D:)- definitely not something I'd want to see in the wild.
I have such mixed feelings about River Monsters- the guy does catch some huge and crazy looking fish, but it's another one of those SHOCKING shows about DANGEROUS KILLER HUGE FISH. Like, you can talk about how weird and scary looking this fish are, and it'd be totally true!, but without the sensationalism that seems to be fueling Animal Planet these days :(
I miss Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin's shows watching AP now D: /soapbox
