What Temp gun are you using?
As the title says, trying to figure out which one I wanna get or what everyone has had good or even bad experience with. My cheap zoo med served its purpose for 2 years looking for something nicer with maybe a little case to keep it protected. I have 2 kids, I don't want it broke and also I don't want to spend a arm or leg.

Get one with a laser. It's worth a few extra bucks.

I use the Reptile Basics 412l, the same one in Mike's link above.

Mine has a laser and it's spot on. I've compared it to that same exact reptile basics one that other people are referring you to because my friend has that. The temps read the same when compared. It's just a fraction of the price. Make sure you get one from North America though, I don't like to get stuff from overseas because it's usually some type of a knockoff or cheaply made.

I too use the famous Yellow Ebay IR Gun. heh. It's cheap, but it has a laser, and heck, it works.

Extech 42512, PE2 and a mastercraft. They are all different D:S ratios. The accuracy is all the same for the most part the accuracy of all IR guns is the same +/-2ºF (1ºC) some are listed at 1.8 (the actual conversion from Metric) but most just round it off. Every now and again you see a cheap one that is +/-2ºC this IMO is useless 4ºF up or down potential error is too great some here believe this is fine I am not one.

The only practical differences (leaving out K type connectors USB differentials ext.) is the D:S ratios it describes from how large an area is read. the other thing connected to this is the optimal distance it is held away from surfaces. the longer D:S ratio is farther than the smaller 1:1 is around 2-4 inches a 12:1 is 36-48 inches. The longer D:S units would be great for things you can't or don't want to get close to but not very useful for things that are non aggressive.

As has been mentioned, pretty much all temp guns have the same +/- ratio, they usually say +/-2% or 2ºF whichever is greater. To get one that has a tighter tolerance range, you will probably have to spend somewhere in the 6-700$ range or up. They are great for scanning and making sure things look close to correct, looking for hot and cold spots that are really off, but I do not like relying on them as being dead on accurate for the simple reason that even their own specs tell us that the aren't. This isn't something you need to spend a lot of money on, the common one sold by Reptile Basics will do you just fine for not a lot of money, as will the Pro Exotics models. Do make sure you get one with the laser pointer is something I would recomend.

for the record, I use the PE2
