Why our non-herp friends are allowed to think we are weirdos...
My Facebook status for this picture:
Although I do keep a lot of crap in my purse I don't generally keep mice in it....
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps41e3623b.jpg
My mom saw the picture and told me I needed to explain (on fb) why on earth I had a mice in my purse, lol. I forgot my non-herp friends might not realize they were escaped feeder mice! I was on my way home from the pet store and noticed some movement in my passenger seat, low and behold I finally had mice escape from their "take home" box. Dang it! I pulled off the road, snapped a quick picture, and shoved them back in the box!
Now I want to see your pictures! Or stories that give your friends/family the right to think you're a little odd. Sometimes we can't blame people for thinking we are weird or odd. I'm pretty sure we are ;)

Everyone thinks I am crazy when they see mice in the freezer. The best is when some one goes to grab some ice and they see a "Frozen Mice" box. They slowly put the ice down and say "I think I will pass on the ice".

I have 19 rat tubs and at times well over a hundred rats. Its fun filled when people find that wall of my trailer

 Oh yes!! I forgot about the freezer thing! I have a separate freezer for all the dead rodents, but there are pinkies on a shelf in our kitchen freezer since it's a nice freezer that doesn't burn things. A friend of my husband was over not too long ago and got in the freezer for ice and said "Oh...dead baby mice..." I nonchalantly said "oh yep, that's the 'dead things' shelf". My husband thought it was humorous, but the friend not so much, lol. The 'dead things' shelf is mostly for the salt water tank, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, regular shrimp, etc so I put my pinkies there too :P

I was going to get a seperate freezer for them but whats the difference between a dead mouse and frozen beef or chicken? Not much really lol so it does not bother me much but my girlfriend that lives with me double bags the boxes of mice to be "safe".

A couple of guys I work with have a bit of a snake phobia.
I mentioned I wish one of my captive snakes would bite me(Have to get it over with at some point and a smaller snake is better than being mistaken for food by a 7 or 8 footer) and, those guys looked at me like I just grew an extra head.

True, but the frozen beef/chicken don't have faces, lol. My collection of frozen rats/mice is way too big for my kitchen freezer. I have 300 frozen rodents right now, that's a lot of real estate!

I only have 3 snakes so for now I will have to look at mouse faces when I open my freezer!

My family and friends have always believed that I was weird and odd,
now that I own reptiles it just reinforced that belief.
I just tell them I'm unique and special.

Well, I had a boa on my kitchen table for awhile. I had no where else that was far enough away for me to be happy with, while she was in qt.
My daughter plays with the snakes food (the rats we breed). Lol, then kisses them goodbye and happily feeds them off.

Yesterday I had to stop for a mouse fuzzy for the GTP, and I had to go to the grocery store as well. So when I was carrying stuff in, I threw his take out box in one of the grocery bags so I didnt have to make as many trips to the car. :p

I once went into a Chinese food restaurant with a box of 10 hopper mice hidden in a reusable grocery bag....
I was so tempted to channel the Asian accent hidden in me and freak out the other patrons there with them lol

Oh my gosh that's too cute! Your daughter is better than me, I apologize to the rats I raised when I feed them off! I even grew up on a pig farm where we ate every runt 'Wilbur' we hand raised and took for walks. We did have one we named Spot, but they were almost always named Wilbur, lol.

I've been to home depot with a Bp in my purse. Wasn't going to leave him in the car. (Had taken him to the vet that day).
Rats are in the freezer, with food but they have their own little shelf.
I think most people are in shock after hearing how much we pay for snakes.

So true!!! It's funny when people ask how much one of my "yellow" babies are and I say $100, they say "holy crap that's a lot for a snake!" Then I say "That's a really cheap ball python...." :O
I try not to talk about price with family, they are not impressed, lol. People don't understand that a hobby is a hobby. I don't buy expensive computer equipment, collect cars, guns, whatever, I collect snakes!

Re: Why our non-herp friends are allowed to think we are weirdos...
People I work with often give me weird looks when they initially find out I have snakes. They are all of a sudden creeped out. Oh well, their loss! Last summer we hosted a "Snakes and Snacks" event and had a lot of coworkers come out to see them. A lot of them finally understood how cool they are and now are constantly asking for updates on the new babies. Breaking the snake stereotype is very hard to do, but is very rewarding when you do!

I hear you! I get all sorts of crap when people first get to know me, but they eventually realize I'm mostly normal :) I do get a lot of "I would have never guessed you owned snakes, especially not 3 dozen of them..." I'm thinking because I'm blonde and not covered in visible tattoos/piercings.

Ive found this to be true; my parents have really warmed up to Mycroft. After seeing some if these morphs on here (the Bumblebee and Hydra especially) I really hope to get another soon....

I often fail miserably when I try to "flaunt my weirdness" since by the time I try hard, I actually get somebody interested in them. The worst time was when I was bragging about my pets to my ROTC instructors, they asked the whole class if they wanted to see my pythons when they talk about survival, and that's when I can show them off and teach about snakes. It was a unanimous vote and they said they'll try to get the principle's permission. This is a big move for the classmates who thought that snakes drink through their skin, or the instructors who thought piebalds were half albino. Now I just need more friendly snakes. Lol
I wish my family was as fascinated about them as my classmates. And my classmates have only seen them through electronic images. Huh.
