Loving this site!!

Hi everyone,

I just joined this week, and am new to snakes. I've had my share of lizards in the past but never a snake. The info on this site is outstanding!

I was asked by an acquaintence if I would take his BP for him in a few weeks as his landlord was forcing him to get rid of it. He got it at a pet store so more than likely it's WC. I'm picking the snake up on 7/3. I have been researching the hell out of BP's so I can be ready for this snake.

I started at kingsnake.com and found the care sheet on BP's. Then I found a breeder of Axanthic BP's about an hour from me. He's given me the name of someone that breeds rats and mice in the area so I can feed p/k and f/t rats to this BP. I also googled a vet in the area and this breeder highly recommends him. I have the BP Manual coming to me in the mail tomorrow.

It sounds like this snake is going to be challenging as well. It's been fasting for more than 6 months and is a horrible shedder. From what this guy has described to me, the humidity and gradient temps aren't right in the tank either. I'll know alot when I pick the snake up next Saturday.

After a week or two i'll try to feed a p/k small rat to the BP. I won't be able to get the BP to the vet until the 19th of July. The vet is just that booked :) All going well with the snake adjusting i'll probably change the BP out to a Sterilite container as I don't really care for aquariums due to the humidity issue. I don't want to rush this snake into a new enclosure and stress it out. I won't be handling the snake at all for a few weeks unless I have to. Is there anything else you guy's can touch on to help me get this snake adjusted to my house smoothly? It will be in my room ( next to no foot traffic). I actually moved my reef tank out of my room and downstairs for this snake :D

I've always wanted a snake and now can get one( and help one at the same time), since this guy is in a desperate situation and my mom couldn't say no :) Sorry for the rambling! Didn't realize I typed that much!

This site is the BEST for advice and info from some very experienced and friendly people who only always have the animals best interests at heart.

Thanks guy's! I've been lurking on this site for the past 2 weeks just gleaning as much info as I could and reading as many care sheets as I possibly can. My mom swears i'm going to go blind infront of the computer! The people on this site looked like they were very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Thats what attracted me to this site versus others. I'll get pics up as soon as I can once I get the snake. After I get it sexed, I'll find out if it is Alex or Alexa :lol:

I know about the sunny weekends :) I'm always at the farm where we board our horses :wink:

Good for you for finding out as much as you can. It sounds like the snake is going into good hands. Keep us posted on his health.
A six month fast seems like it would be due to stress. Get your temps and humidity to where they should be and let him relax and get used to the place for a couple of weeks. Then try feeding.

Welcome aboard! Sounds like you've got all the basics pretty much figured out. There's a good chance that the snake has been fasting because the husbandry was all wrong. I'll bet when you get it into a calm, warm, moderately humid environment, the appetite will kick in nicely. I'll be looking forward to updates about his progress!

I don't have the snake yet. I'll be picking it up on July 3. I haven't seen this animal, and I hope that it not eating for 6 months is he/she protesting the environment that they are in :)

It will be going in my room ( no foot traffic really). And I might just keep the cage dark if it really stresses out. From what I understand it is a very mellow snake and should be easy to handle once it settles in.

I'll let you know what he/she looks like after I pick it up :) Thanks for the welcomes by the way!

Welcome to the forum, Danielle! It sounds like this snake will be in very capable hands. We really like to see people doing their homework before bringing the snake home, and will definitely be happy to help answer any questions that we can as you're trying to tweak the setup or get him eating again.

And who the heck has a sunny weekend? It looks almost like a hurricane here!

Yay!!! Tomorrow I am calling to arrange a time and place to pick my "soon-to-be" first snake up on Sat! I am sooo excited :P I just can't wait :o Little does my mom know that this is the first of many forseeable snakes in my future 8) :twisted: :twisted: !! We've only had 3 days in the last month or so that haven't been sunny out here in BC, muahaha!!!

Everyday is sunny in FL, may not be sunny all day, but it's sunny everyday......hence the nickname, 'Sunshine State'

I think we've not had rain one day out of the last 3 weeks. My kids have declared the multi-year drought over. :) But it's usually only rainy for part of the day and sunny or overcast for the rest so that we can properly enjoy the humidity.

Ok, I was supposed to get the snake today. I didn't. The guy had to work so I should be getting the snake tomorrow( keeping fingers crossed as I don't think I can take one more day of anticipation :P ). Now, If you read my post in the site general section, i'm also getting this guy's Red Tegu. I do have an emty 75g tank sitting around but seriously, I was not expecting to get the lizard practically dumped on me! I've been researching Tegus and they don't look too hard to take care of. They look kind of interesting. I just don't know if i'm ready for it :) I'm going to give it a go as this guy HAS to get rid of the Tegu tomorrow
(landlords- orders). So if any experienced Tegu owners read this, post or pm me with as much care info as you have! I'm researching them now, but experiences are always appreciated!

Ok, you can now count me in the club of BP owners! She is CUTE!!!!! I am in LOVE with her! She is a beautiful normal BP, very sweet considering I just got her and she had to be handled quite alot because I had to clean her tank out as the guy couldn't have cleaned it for 2 months. There was crap everywhere! The tank stunk to high heavens :shock: She is otherwise a very healthy BP, and is only about 2ft long ( wouldn't that make her around 2 years or so?). She only came with a tank and screen. NO hides, NO water bowls, NO thermometer, NO nothing! I knew I was going to be rescuing these guy's (Tegu included). I love the way she feels in my hands. The power she has is AWESOME! I won't be holding her anymore for 2-3 weeks (unless I have to re-sterilze her tank or something like that) depending on how she settles in. So far so good! I bought a hide for her and will be getting everything else she needs on Tuesday. So far she is just hanging out on top of her hide and not in it. She just keeps inquisitively watching what I am doing and feeling out her surroundings. Oh, Her name is Alexa. I'll keep you guys updated on her progress!

Thanks Marla! Alexa has been in hiding the whole day. She has been watching myself and Beefy's every move today :) She'll take alot more time to get accustomed to my house, but she'll be fine in time. I'm getting the thermometers tomorrow for both Beefy and Alexa. We'll see how she is tomorrow :p
