    Lightroom 5 test shots
Since I have a new camera waiting on me to get home (Sony NEX-6), I went ahead and downloaded Adobe Lightroom 5 so I could start working with it.

I grabbed a handful of JPEGs that were shot with my Sony TX-10 point and shoot and went about doing some adjustments/correction.

I really just have to say, wow. Lightroom seems easy to use (I still have a LOT to learn), and effective. It is NOT photoshop (no layers, etc...) but can add a watermark. Also, it is a little expensive ($150) but at least it is stand alone and not on the "Creative Cloud"...

So, here are the corrected pics (WB, curves, etc...)

They look great. How noticeable is the difference when the photos are side by side? I assume its a great deal better.

Thanks, I will post up the before and after of the last pic of the Fire YB outside, it needed the most correction of over exposure.

Here is a before/after side by side screen shot from Lightroom. His color is a little washed out in the before and spot on in the after.

Lightroom 5 is cheap at 150 for what it offers. The new healing brush tool works wonders as does the new cloning tool. Now it is not cs6 by any means but the standalone photoshop is 600 usd but thanks to buying cs6 you do get a discount for the CC for 20 a month :-P. but pointless - as a professional wildlife photographer Ive been using Lightroom for years and years at this point and it saves me so much time rather than going into adobe PS unless I absolutely have to work in layers or use USM when I'm working at high ISO late in the day shooting birds. Nice shots, just remember that Lightroom 5 is well worth the ticket price to play ;) as is photoshop in the end :-P

Looking at those comparison shots 150 is more then worth it. If I did more with photography then shooting on vacation's I would definitely pick it up. Thank you for posting those compare shots. Really shows the difference.

There is no more legal stand alone photoshop. They stopped selling copies months ago (around Christmas) and directed retailers to do the same. You now, to have a new legal, copy need to rent it. lightroom is looks to be following suit. 400-500$ a year.

Yeah I noticed that with the whole CC thing. I have Lightroom 5 and Photoshop Elements 11 (which is on sale on Amazon right now for <$70). Both are stand alone.

Lightroom CC is released and I don't know about elements the full version however is CC only now (the last stand alone version has been sold) the new version will not be stand alone. The guessing is lightroom will follow that pattern and the next lightroom update will be CC only. Like they announced with the rest of the suite. They snuck that in with the suite with little fuss now after the fact is uproar but it is done. If you like it tell them about the stand alone. Or switch to something else there are lots of lightroom alternatives some better.

Amazon is still selling stand alone Lightroom, PS Elements and the elements version of the movie one. I think I will switch before going CC, I am just not a fan of that idea.

Incredible shots with great editing, but it sure makes it easy when you've got quality subjects to shoot in the first place.

I have a man crush on Delta too - your calider is insane. Hopefully someday I can use my sugar girl to produce some spider sugars anywhere near the quality of Delta.

Another software option is Corel PaintShop Pro. You can use layers in this and if you feel like investing some time create or share filters, brushes, etc.
Most of your Photoshop plugins will work and it comes in under $100 at the highest retail I've seen half that or less online.
I was just about too invest in Lightroom for easier HDR work until I saw the new licencing model. It would only make sense if it made me money instead of being a hobby.

Yeah I will keep using Lightroom 5 until I can not longer get updates without going to CC, then it will be time to hit the dusty trail.

It is brutal, I hope that the out cry is loud and vocal. The whole you cannot own software and only rent it concept is very anti consumer. Isn't one of the game console doing that games are not going to be transferable person to person? I seem to think it was Microsoft but I am not sure.

Yeah I think that was ABOX, but the uproar and the competition from the PS4 has caused them to backtrack on that some. Problem is Adobe may not have enough direct competition to care about the uproar.

    1) ps6 is still available for purchase and they will still update it via patches. If you buy cs6 you get your first year of CC for 19.99 a month.

    2) yep, great chance Lightroom will no longer be standalone same with adobe after effects.

    3) it's all about anti piracy and the company trying to recover lost funds due to customers stealing their software constantly.

I am completely against this move because much like renting I am pro buying on anything because renting just loses money and does not retain value. They take away the value of photoshop by making you pay 600 a year for new customers to have access to CS. This is a steep price for people who may still be using cs4 or even cs5. Because to them it's not worth the upgrade. The plus side is even if they do not release new drivers for camera raw. You can always conver raws to DNG and use them with any version of CS you have :)

Adobe no longer sells PS6. Adobe Canada told all the retailers to pull it from the shelves when CC was announced. What retailers are not following adobes directives I cannot imagine.
It is not on the web site and as there are so many people selling not fully legal versions (grey market) I never buy software from anyone but adobe.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/catalo...stpopular.html

It is not about anti piracy as there are hacks already, (difficult but there) It is money grab. The enterprise editions are gone. It is a massive increase in pricing. Massive. The lab I manage costs about 4000$ for a 20 computer lab with a 3 year service contract, unlimited support and all the updates for the complete suite. The new pricing is 49.99 month (no discount for institutional prices) per machine (x20=999.8 monthly) by 11997.60 a year x3 is 35992$ an increase of 31992$. The people that are going to steal it will continue that is not going to change it is about the institutional groups that must buy it and are now forced out of the agreements they have had in place for many years. My lab has had a service contract since 1990 the first full version. Make no mistake this is about a MASSIVE price hike.

Picture buying a loaf of bread tomorrow and it costing 35$ from 4$ it is about the same increase.

BHphoto out of New York a MAJOR retailer is still offering photoshop Cs6 for individual retail purchase. And that is a very trustworthy company.

Well, Adobe is just leaving room now for their competitors to step in.
