    Lost almost everything
Just got home from NC. Was only gone friday afternoon, saturday, and sunday. Came home to find that the exhaust vent to my portable ac unit had fallen out of the window and my building was at 130 degrees. I had put in thermostat fail safes for the heaters but never thought about the ac. I am so messed up right now I don't know what to do...

from right now it looks like I lost
    fire yb
    spinner
    bumble bee
    yb
    spider
Het albino and any eggs she is carrying
    albino
    my 2 normals
    lesser
    butter
    mojave
    fire
    2 leopard geckos
    all my rats
and looks like most of the rest may have neuro damage

I feel like I could die right now.

Feel for you man.... We lost a large portion of our collection this past Jan. It sucks and nothing anyone says makes it better. Ours was completely our fault as well, at least was a complete accident.
Try not to beat yourself up too much.

Luckily I decided to wait till after I got back to move the retics so they were still in the house in QT, so they are all fine.

    That is so awful :(

So the heat generated by the AC was getting blown inside, which resulted in heating the apartment rather than cooling it even though the AC itself was running?

EDIT: It's in a building that naturally got to 130 without the AC running?

Yes, the Exhaust hose which was connected to the plastic bracket that was in the window fell and landed pointing at my adult racks so I lost all the snakes that were in those 3 racks, except for the Mystic girl that was in the very top of the tallest rack in the back. I really don't think it happened to long before I got home because they didn't look like they had been that way for long.

I keep trying to dig the holes but it is so hot and my mind is wondering so much... I know it could have been a lot worse, but this sucks so bad.

I do not wish to add 'what ifs' to this thread, but you mentioned you hadn't considered adding a failsafe to the AC.

So you're saying you could put a failsafe on the AC where if it gets TOO hot the AC turns off like you would use a Tstat on a heater? So you set the Tstat to like 90 and if it ever hits that temp you assume that having the AC running is not helping but hurting?

Yes, it was relatively cool this weekend here(only about 85-86) so the building would have probably only gotten to about 95 or so if the ac unit would have shut off.

It also looks like I am going to loose the mystic girl and a couple of the babies... They are corkscrewing :(

    Wes that sucks big time.
I am guessing that your ac unit does not fit the widow right so you were trying to duct the exhaust heat out the window and it failed to stay in and actually caused it to heat the room up more (by blowing the exhaust air back in) .

It was a portable ac unit that has an exhaust hose that connects to a bracket you put in the window. The bracket had no way to be secured to the window and the window on my building is small and doesn't hold much weight on the bracket. So I put 3M double sided tape on the top and bottom of the bracket before I put it down in the groves of the window, then taped the outside of it with aluminum tape. I guess that wasn't enough because it came back out... I am taking two pieces of flat bar that are a little bit longer than the outside of the window and I am going to secure the bracket from the outside so it cannot come out again. Something I should have thought of to start with, and am now kicking the hell out of my self for it.

I am very sorry to hear for your loss. This very same thing happened to me 20 years ago. My heart was broken. I was gifted a hatchling snake and it was very healing. I would like to offer you to same. I have some ball pythons hatching now and over the next couple of months. Mostly Fire combos. Please let me know when/if you would consider this gift. Chris

I want to take a minute to thank everyone for their support and not giving me hell about the mistake I made. This has been a learning experience that I wouldn't want my worst enemy to go through... I will now be quadruple checking anything that even has a .000001% chance of going wrong. I refuse to let something like this happen again. It is one thing when a freak accident happens but when something like this happens that could have easily been prevented then there is no excuse. I just appreciate you guys not beating me up like I am already doing to myself. Thank you all!

I want to give a special thanks to SansCera for offering a hatchling to help rebuild my collection. It is great knowing there are people out there like you. Thank you so much! :)

I also want to publicly say I am sorry to all the animals that lost their lives in the accident. I love you all and miss you soo much. :tears: :(

To be honest I don't think this was a problem anyone could be expected to have seen happening.

Anyone who thinks you are to blame for this through inattention or negligence probably also probably thinks you should have seen it coming in the phases of the moon and stars.
