Sunglows, Lipsticks, Albinos? Kahl vs Sharp? Q's and Pic Requests!
So I was talking to my mom, and she agreed to get me a boa for my graduation gift after I finish college! (Still gonna get a BP for myself first, though). ;)
I was looking at some morphs, and I'm quite partial to sunglows, lipsticks, and certain albinos - particularly jungles and motleys.
Some questions....
Are lipsticks just a variation of sunglows?
Is sunglow a type of albino? I'm kind of confused about this.
From my very basic understanding, Kahl and Sharp are just the two different lines, but what separates them from one another?
My snakes will all be pets, and I want awesome looking pets. I'd want a high contrast boa with deep orange/red patterns. Which of these lines should I look at when I go to get my boa? Which of the lines tend to keep the contrast and vivid colors better?
What really separates all of these colors from one another? I've seen some regular albinos that look a lot like sunglows, but for a fraction of the price. Is it all just in the genetics? (Like I said, I'm just looking for a pet, so the genetics aren't hugely important to me, aside from wanting a healthy/temperamentally sound snake).
I've been having a tough time finding what these morphs look like as adults. Do they all tend to yellow out? The babies look awesome. Very pale color with bright, vivid patterns; then I find some as adults and it looks like the pale color yellows out and the patterns blend and pale out.
If you have any of these morphs, would you mind posting before/after pics, as babies then as adults? (Or when they're older?)
Hopefully this post makes sense! Big thank you in advance!

from what i gather with my very limited boa knowledge on genetics.. kahl and sharp are two different lines if albino that are NOT compatible. a sunglow is a designer morph (more than one morph) with albino and hypo. so a sunglow is albino x hypo. and lipstick is just a "line" of sunglows selectively bred for their sharp contrast and bright reds.
someone correct me if i'm wrong. lol

Lipstick albinos are Kahl albinos (a blood line of albinos) that have been specifically bred for their coloring.
Sunglow is a hypo albino.
You're right that Kahl and Sharp are separate lines, that means they aren't compatible and if bred together the offspring would be double het kahl albino and sharp albino, but all visually normals.
Regular albinos yellow out the most. I think if you want something that will hold it's color and contrast the best then a sunglow would be way to go. If that's too pricey, there's been a lot of selective breeding with both strains of the albinos so just look for a reputable breeder.
Adding jungle and motley will jump the price up even more

This is correct, in a nutshell. :gj:
To add to that...
Sunglows are hypomelanistic albinos and carry and express both a recessive and a co-dominant gene.
Kahl and Sharp albinos were developed by two different individuals and are not compatible because the gene sits at different loci. They are not bred together because it would be impossible to know which albino was produced when the resulting hets were then bred.
All albinos, no matter what complex, will yellow out as they age. Sunglows tend to retain a more orange hue and more distinct tail patterns as adults, but they do yellow. The Kahls will tend to yellow the most, but retain more oranges/pinks in the tail pattern. The Sharps won't yellow quite as much and stay whiter, but their patterns tend to fade more.
There are two additional "color lines" of the Kahl albinos - lipstick and coral. Both of these tend to have an overall pink blushing to their color and the lipsticks in particular have very dark and distinct patterns. Of all the albino complex, a lipstick sunglow will definitely hold its color the best.
A jungle or motley albino is going to carry a pretty heavy price tag. A sunglow will be mid-range. A top quality lipstick albino will run about the same as a sunglow. Sharp albinos cost more than Kahls and tend to be harder to find.
This is my Coral Sunglow Arabesque, Pandora, as a baby.....

I think that considering what most people want for graduation gifts, she'll be willing to get me a snake. Haha.
So for a cool pet that'll keep its color best, I should probably take the route of a lipstick sunglow?
Haven't read much about corals - she's beautiful! Are they more pink than the others?

The lipstick line has more distinct and darker pigmented patterns. The coral line has all-over pink blushing and hues. Both are very pretty and tend to help the adult retain color. :gj:
And, yes, if you want to work with the albino gene, a sunglow will be a good investment for the future. Later on, you can pick up a male snow to breed to her (albino x anery which is a double recessive) and produce babies that are het moonglow! :D

WOW! She's gorgeous!
She definitely looks like her markings got DARKER as she got older!
And I couldn't help but notice Pikachu in the background, LOL.
ETA: AND we have the same name. Spelled the same too!

Every one has given good info. I'll contribute pictures of my Coral albino. She is just over a year old. I don't have baby pics, as I've only had her six months. But she is really starting to get her pinks lately.

Btw, the coral albinos tend to get pinker as they grow - the pink blushing comes in with time. You can see this happening with DooLittle's boa above.
GfssiConstrictors has some VERY nice Kahl Coral Sunglow currently available - check them out. Prices are fairly reasonable for a coral sunglow so it'll give you an idea what you're looking at price-wise. Nicole also has a first-class reputation. :gj:

So the corals get pinker while the other lines yellow out more?
And I came across an incredible coral sunglow motley. Didn't see a price on there. I don't expect to be done with college any sooner than three years, but that was BY FAR the most gorgeous one I have seen so far! Most I've seen advertised have pretty crummy saddles. I like THICK saddles! Hopefully by the time I get my graduation 'gift,' there's more to choose from. ;)

Here is my Kahl line Sunglow. She is due to drop some babies in 50- 60 days or so from a pairing with a Lipstick Motley Sunglow.

Here is the same Sunglow as a baby, you can see her color did change but in my opinion for the better

Thank you! I'm a big fan of hers. I just have the hardest time taking photos of her, and I don't trust her to take her outside with so many smells lol

Yes, generally speaking, that's true.
Those coral sunglow motleys would be terrific, but will also carry a pretty terrific price tag. I don't know what limit your graduation gift might have, but its something to keep in mind of course. Peruse FB a lot and try joining the following 2 groups - there's lots of ads and pictures and topics.... ;)

I think my mom would be willing to spend about $2,000 on a snake for me. Possibly a bit more.
I'm going to buy all the supplies; all I asked was that she buys the snake for me. Hehe.
She told me I should work in sales. I was like, "Well, if a snake that can live for 20 years in captivity costs $2,000, that really only comes out to being $100 per year! So really, it's not that bad of a deal!" LOL

Holy crap. If my mom would spend $2000 on a snake for me, there's a few things other than an albino or sunglow I'd be looking at. But it is all about what YOU want, and if you likey sunglows, you should get a sunglow!! But in the meantime check out this bad boy.......
https://www.facebook.com/ryan.burke.clockwork Scroll down to below the GTPs he has listed - there's a 2013 male motley sunglow for 1400 shipped. And you can't go wrong with Ryan Burke/Clockwork Reptiles. He's excellent to work with! :gj:

Ha ha,, I have not been following this closely. Here I was think my $200+ including shipping was a bit of cash LOL! I had to keep it sort of cheap so my wife would not get upset. Your mom is pretty cool.
Not being a morph guy, yet still appreciating the beauty of morphs, I'd say find something pretty, but also invest in supplies to give your new resident the display cage of a lifetime!
Holy Crap is right LOL!

Oh agreed!! Use some of that allowance to get some supplies and a great cage! You'll need one anyhow, so get a good one! I personally suggest ConstrictorsNW - Ed is great to work with and his stuff is top-notch.
I'd also suggest investing in a snake with super genetics. Even if you don't plan to breed, you never know where this will take you. And if you decide to breed later on, you'll have a great foundation animal to start with. :gj:
-
Constrictors NW Cages are on my list. I have several that I've been looking at, but so far, those are high on my list.
Here's my list that I've compiled.
ConstrictorsNW
Vision
Precision Cages
Showcase Cages
PVC Cages
Boaphile Plastic
I like the Showcase cages because they're really pretty to look at, but they're really expensive (but I have about 3 years to save up for it, so we'll see). But I'm not sure if they're stackable, which I do need....
I'm considering a Vision cage because they're aesthetically appealing, but I'm going to need to stack different sizes, and I don't know if that'd be possible. Plus, I think I'd want to get a cage that's larger than the largest available size than the Vision cages offer.
I think Boaphile is the company with a fairly poor customer service reputation.
Other than those ones, I haven't looked too far into the other ones. But if I can find stackable cages with a 6 foot long cage on the bottom and I can put two 3 foot cages side by side on top of them, then I'd be happy! That's what I'm really looking for! (As my goal is to have my RTB, a BRB, and at least 2-4 balls - I'd likely be adding to that).

Re: Sunglows, Lipsticks, Albinos? Kahl vs Sharp? Q's and Pic Requests!
Definately go with a sunglow over just a plain albino.
The lipstck line would be a good one to look into.
I say: research and take your time! Boas are great pet snakes!
Here's a pic of a junglow from one of my litters last year. Just to fire you up! LOL

I think I saw $2k.
I would really take considerable time looking around, etc... There is some really nice stuff out there.
$500 should be set aside for all supplies. IMO
