Hatchling Tub Size

So i'm looking into purchasing a new baby rack. Right now I have one that holds 16 shoebox tubs but I'm looking to replace it with a PVC rack. If I plan to put hatchlings as well as some I plan on holding back in this rack, should I go with a shoebox rack or a V-18 rack? Or, is there another option that's better?

I like shoebox tubs for hatchlings myself. They can stay in that size for a while and it's not too big to start with.

Initially I was going to go with a hatchling rack and then near November/December try and get a 12-15qt rack for my "grow up rack" until they are big enough to fit into 28qt tubs. However, when I was inquiring about a rack, I was advised to think about V-18 racks. I didn't see why that would be better since it's just longer than a shoebox. I figured a shoebox tub could easily hold a snake up to 200-300g if not a little larger. By that time, I would have a 12 or 15 qt rack to put them in.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds like a good plan to me. I keep my hatchlings in 6 qt tubs then move them to 12 qt tubs once they reach 200g.

I would go with the V-18. I put anything from hatchlings to 750g BP's in mine. They eat like hogs in them and you don't need to bother with additional smaller racks that you will grow out of in a few months time.

I LOVE my V18 rack. It ends up being a combo hatchling/grow out rack. I got mine from Chris at CSerpents. I highly recommend Chris and his racks. His racks are top notch and I haven't had any issues.

Chris was the one I inquired about. I wanted one of his V-70 racks but I wanted the 5 tub one and he couldn't ship it to me. However, he's coming to the NARBC in August so I was thinking about placing an order and picking up the rack when I go to the show in August. I've only heard good things about his racks. While I'm happy with my RBI racks, I want to try a variety of racks to see what I want. I'll probably place an order for an AP hatchling rack end of the year for my corn snake babies when they hatch out.

I have 2 RBI sweater box racks. I thought I was happy with them until I got racks from Chris. Now I can't wait to get rid of my RBI racks.

I have a hatchling rack, a v18 and a 5 tub V70. All are top quality and amazing racks.

Very interesting. I have a sweaterbox rack and a CB-70 rack all from RBI. I LOVE them so far. Maybe I'll place an order for one after all.

I move them straight to V-70 racks when they hit ~700-800g.

He's coming to the NARBC in August. I don't have a need for such a large rack...yet. I have two slots open on my CB-70 rack that I have. However, if he comes to the NARBC in February or August of 2014, I'll definitely consider ordering one. By that time I'll have my empty slots filled and possibly need one more. I'm also adding new hatchlings to my group this summer/fall and they will hopefully need big tubs by that time next year. Right now I have everyone 400g+ in 28qt tubs. One of my normals is pushing 900g so she's about to get bumped up to my CB-70 rack to free up a slot or two in my 28qt rack. Once my bumblebee, mojave, and the lemonblast all come out of QT they will be going into the 28qt racks.

All that rambling is just to say that by this time next year, I'll need more larger tubs. :D

If you are handy look into building your own racks it is much more cost effective. Just my 2 cents.

I tried that. The rack I have for my corn snakes is a DIY rack out of a plastic shelving system. I hate it. The tubs are too tight. I'm not very handy (though I know people who are) and I'm not a huge fan of wood racks because all I ever hear are the horror stories about the racks warping because of the heat/moisture (even with proper sealing). I also have issues with a very hot snake room due to open-style racks. Ever since I started switching to PVC enclosed racks, there's been a noticeable drop in temp (which is what I wanted). If I was able to find affordable PVC sheets, then I might attempt a DIY rack.

This is my first year using Chris's V-18 racks for my hatchlings. I used 6-qt. tubs previously, but I love the versatility of the V-18s that allows me to skip the 15-qt. tub stage. My first clutch in the V-18s is taking longer to start feeding than I have experienced previously, but one clutch isn't enough for me to conclude that it's an issue with the tub size. And Chris is absolutely awesome to work with!

It's a matter of how long you think the hatchlings will stay with you.

I have some 6 quarts racks from AP but now I am only buying V18 racks (also from AP not listed on their site but will build them for you if you ask).

I love the fact that hatchlings can remain in those tubs a little longer if needed (whether they do not sell or they are hold backs) and that I can transition them straight to their adult tubs afterward (32 quarts for males and V70 for females)

Additionally you can house more hatchlings in a rack of the same heights since the V18 are lower profile.

I would be interested to know if your other clutches have this same issue. I'm not opposed to having multiple rack sizes.

I have a limitation on space, which is the appeal of reducing the number of sizes I need to fit. My next clutch pips 4th of July weekend, so I'll let you know how they start feeding.

Well, I know for a fact that I have two hatchlings coming here that will need a smaller rack (my smallest tubs are 28qt tubs). I've got a "rack" for 6 qt tubs with lids on that will work, but I'd rather replace the rack with something that looks prettier and more uniform with the black PVC racks that I already have.

I'd like to hope my babies will sell relatively quick and that I won't be holding onto them for months and months, but I want to be prepared in case I DO have them. I also want a place where I can grow out my hold backs. Out of the two clutches I'm expecting, I'm really hoping for 1 or 2 hold backs and those will need rack space too. Again, they could stay in their baby tubs that I already have planned for them, but I'd rather get them something more fitting. If a v-18 tub will do that for me, then I'll consider purchasing one of those.

I'm in the same boat. I've got a limited number of space until I can move into a place where I can dedicate a room to my snakes. Currently they share my space so I have to juggle my racks with my own furniture.

You can always go with 6 quarts and in the future get one or two v18 just in case (holdbacks, hatchlings not selling as fast as you hope)

I still have my 6 quarts racks and they are not going anywhere ;)

That's what I've considered doing as well. I'm not opposed to 6 qt for the new hatchlings and ones that sell relatively quickly. Then the v-18s for babies I plan to hold back or who don't sell.

I may just use my current baby rack and order a v-18.
