Glass Thickness?
Hello everyone, I'm new here. I just had a quick question about glass thickness for an enclosure I'm building. My panels would have to be about 22"x22" each and would be framed with wood. Like individual windows. Anyway, on some of the bigger boas and pythons I hear people say to use 1/4", but for something smaller, like a dwarf boa or a BP, could you get by with maybe 1/8" double strength? I figured since the panels wouldn't be too big, and would have solid frames, 1/8" may suffice. I'm trying to keep weight down, since I'm building a stackable enclosure.
Any thoughts?
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I found this by accident and it was the only place I could find "forum tools"... So I might as well ask, what's the easiest way to start a thread in select categories??
Thanks everyone and anyone.

Plexi Glass or Lexan would work just as well, keep weight way down, and be more impact resistant.
You only have to be careful what you clean it with so you don't scratch it.
Are we talking about the front doors or the whole thing?

Re: Glass Thickness?
The scratching is why I don't want to use plexiglass or variations of.
It would just be the glass and sides. I built something similar for my Bearded Dragon, but I don't know how to post pics yet. Or I'm not allowed yet. I used 1/8" for that, and it works great. But I know snakes like to push and look for ways to escape (weak spots, gaps, etc.).

you have to use a hosting site like photobucket and then post the link here

Right on. Looks like I'll have to sign up for Photo Bucket. Haha

No 1/8 will not be strong enough 1/4 at least. Snakes not only weigh more but are able to apply far more force I have had a snake break 12 guage wire. I would figure 1/4 for the sides and if you were thing floor as well 1/4 or heavier. I would suggest plain PVC yes it is heavy too (not expanded which is lighter and has air bubbles through it) it is tough and cleans easily it also is easily heated through as well.

This is my Beardie cage. The snakes would be similar. The floor and back would be wood.

Was this a BP that broke 12ga wire?

Very nice.................. too big for a ball though

Re: Glass Thickness?
Yeah. I'm actually shooting for a Caulker Cay Boa. They're similar in size, that's why I checked here. The bottom is just storage, and the top is a hood to hold lights, timers, stats, etc.
For my Cay Boa, I was thinking 5' W, 2' D, 2' H. I know this is a BP forum, but is that too big? They max out at about 5 ft.
And thanks for the complement. It was a lot of work. Haha.

Oops, I meant 3'Wx2'Dx2'H. Sorry.

1/4 is fine, yes my big female, it was holding a plant and she get inbetween it and the side and broke it. Pound for pound reptiles are second only to insects. That is beautiful work. Think on the PVC if you are planning to heat through it. If not ignore that suggestion. I know nothing of Caulker Cay Boas.
Some use the rule of thumb of the digonal measurement should be equile to the snakes lengh as min. I admitadly know next to nothing about boas but it is not likely that a bit generous space would be a problem.

Re: Glass Thickness?
Thanks. I was going to aim for a radiant heat panel, mount it inside the enclosure, with LED lighting. That way I can keep the height down also. I can stack more cages if I don't need hoods for lighting and heating. I'll need to experiment. I appreciate the feedback. Also, by PVC, do you mean clear PVC plexiglass type stuff? I'd like to at least look into it as an alternative. Lowes product? Or specialty shop?

Glass Thickness?
No PVC is typically black/ grey or colours. It is used in signage and food preparation + a ton of other things.

First google link.
It is dense tough and reasonable to heat through. Usually plastic reptile things use pvcx or expanded PVC sheet like this

But it is an excellent insulator which sucks if you are trying to heat through it.
With arboreal set ups uth are useless so there is not much point to using PVC but for its moisture resistance and ease of cleaning.

Glass Thickness?
There are no lowes near me so I can't say the local hardware store near me has small bits at stupid high mark ups. The local plastics manufacturer will sell smaller bits (off cuts) cheap. I have a 36x24 1/4 bit of it that was 20$ when my sister asked for a similar price she got it for 14$. I think she got a blue eyes discount!

Haha. That's cool. I've seen the expanded before. I didn't know they made solid sheets. My knowledge of PVC is strictly regarding pipe. I'm a contractor. I'll look into glass prices, I have a local place that has reasonable prices. If I can't work something out, I may have to go with some sort of plastic. I really appreciate you taking the time to link that stuff to me. Thanks a lot.
