Animal Control quote "Ball pythons enjoy eating eggs as a treat!"
I know we all have heard the dumbest quotes from people in the public eye concerning our reptiles but this one blew me away.

Last night on the news here in San Diego (maybe someone smarter than me can link the entire story :) a guy found a container of some sort in a garbage can with a 3-4 long normal ball in it. Called the police. They called animal control. All good right. Well as good as can be expected. Animal control lady does the next interview and says " Yes its a python. A ball python makes a great pet, blah blah.....Snake is in great condition. And whoever put him in the container even put eggs in the box with him. And we all know snakes love to eat eggs as a treat!! The snake will be available for adoption.....blah blah"

Obviously I know there are egg eating snakes out there but really saying that about a ball python. Any quick internet search would have answered that question!!

Wow, do you think maybe it's a female that laid eggs in the box? :(

It kind of amazes me how little people know about animals, I mean the internet has been around for a while now.

Perhaps people have tried this, but I honestly can't imagine egg consumption working out for a constrictor. just my :2cent:. Anyone here ever tried this? I'm wearing my skeptical face.

I betcha that snake laid eggs and the owner didn't know what to do, so they dumped it. They keep calling it a he but SHE looks to be a pretty good size, and a little hollow looking (like she recently laid).

:/ I wonder if someone can contact the humane society and ask what happened to the eggs? Or see if they can get the animal sexed?

I'm tempted to try it for a laugh.

Though I am a bit worried about the shell. :confusd:

Hard boiled egg - peel the shell, baste it thoroughly in rat poo, and hit it with the hair dryer.

    Video tape the strike.

After watching the video the animal does look like a female that just recently laid...poor baby.

Well, at least it wasn't reported in a negative way like the media normally does, and it sounds like the snake will be cared for properly instead of being euthanized.

    Well,

I offered a heated (raw) egg to 8 adult ball pythons - all of whom should be hungry.

Several flicked their tongue like mad at it for a bit then wandered off.

Not one of them tried to eat it.

Has anyone local tried contacting the humane society to see if they can help with information? I have emailed and called news and radio stations in the past to offer information to help them report more accurately, and most places are happy to have correct information.

Anyone else notice the nice vision cages the humane society is using? Someone there knew enough about reptiles to realize good, long lasting caging would be a solid investment just in case.

Rather than just sighing over the misinformation, help! Reaching out to your local stations to politely correct inaccurate information is one little step towards educating the public. :)
