So Who Has Cats and Snakes?
We recently got a rescue cat. Or kitten at current. It's really changing how we do things. At the moment, I now have the snake room closed at all times. However, I do want to eventually get her introduced to the room and its occupants. I would like to try and get her used to the animals so she doesn't see them as a toy or prey when I take them out.

Anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks.

I temporarily had my pythons over at my girlfriends house, who has a cat.

The cat refused to be in the same room as the pythons (but he is afraid of everything so go figure...).

I don't mix cats and pythons during handling of the pythons. The cats' food bowl and litter box is in the snake room, as is their sunning spot. They aren't interested in the snakes unless I'm cleaning.

I don't let them close, but they are allowed to "supervise" as long as they maintain a respectable distance.

There's no need for them to interact. Doing so is just begging for trouble.

I have two cats, both are very curious about the snakes but especially Lola. I am weary about having my larger snakes out around the cats, but she can't stay away..i just think it's fun to watch...i dont think she aims to do any harm, but then again who knows cuz she's kinda crazy lol

My cat is much more interested in my ASFs than the snakes. I keep the snake room door closed at all times. Cat usually comes in when I clean and lays in the middle of the floor. he really isn't too much of a nuisance toward the snakes.

My cat is very interested in the snakes when they are in their enclosures, but she seem to have learned that what's in my hand isn't a toy. I can have her sitting right next to me and not care, but once I out them back, it's huntin' time!Just make sure your enclosures are sturdy and your cat can't knock them down or open them. If your worried about her while you're holding a snake, lock her in the bathroom, or in her designated play area if you have one.You may be able to teach her that snake aren't toys since she is still a kitten. You can train her that anything in your hand, or on your body, isn't a toy. If she tries to attack, blow in her face and tell her NO! If she's being good, pet her, tell her she's being good in a sweet voice, and give her a treat. Clicker training works as well with cats as it does with dogs! Also, don't buy toys that resemble a snake or strings. Buy feather toys and balls, my cat loves her turbo track!Make sure she knows that the snake room/racks/enclosures are off limits.

Re: So Who Has Cats and Snakes?
Before I was forced to rehome my cat, I had her with my snakes. We all lived in the same room in my apartment (because that's what we had available to us). At first she got along great and kept her distance. I usually had her out or the snakes out, one or the other. However, one day I came home and she had knocked over a heat lamp trying to get on top of the cage to look at the snake in it. From that point on, I kept the snakes in my room and her out of my room when I wasn't home.

Some cats are really lazy and don't care, others (like mine) are very curious and want to play with the snakes. It's those cats that you want to be cautious of. Just watch your new kitten's personality and if she seems overly bold and wanting to mess with the cages, don't let her anywhere near the snakes.

I have both snakes and cats, plural. I will tell you, my cats do like to look at the snakes in their tubs if the snakes are out and about. Most of them will freak out and run if I get one out, it seems the snakes have an odor the cats don't like. However, I have a few who I do not allow near me when I have a snake out, simply because the cat's innate nature is to pounce on anything resembling a string. Cats claws are bacteria breeding grounds, and a scratch or catch by a cat claw that breaks the skin will result in a severe infection which I know you don't want.

Just use common sense and watch your animals carefully when they are around one another.

There are 6 cats in the house I live in. Some of the cats do go in and out of where I have my snakes. They don't seem to pay them much mind but they'll become interested if they see activity in the tubs.. All of my snakes are in tubs/a rack except for one male hognose in a 20G. I did have my largest cat fall through the screen top of that, so be careful. I've since reworked things to prevent cat-astrope.

Oh, and definitely be aware if you have your snake out. I had my male lesser BP out a few weeks ago and one of my cats tried to jump in my lap like he tends to do - I had the snake in my hands. Before I knew it the BP had tagged my cat right on the nose :O He wasn't hurt but I felt bad about that. I try to kick them out of the room if I'm gonna be taking out snakes now.

My cats really old, and has no interest in my snakes or ASFs. I do have to be careful while handling my bps because if I sit down with one, she thinks it means for her to come over, haha

I have both. The cats are very interested in the snakes, so I keep the cats away whenever I'm handling.

My cats (past and present) have never really cared about the snakes. They ignored them in the cages unless they're was movement, then maybe they'd watch for a short while, but the snakes don't have the right movement to spark their interest. When I have a little one out (corns or milk), Melina will sometimes glance at it, but usually just ignores it. I only sit around with the bigger snakes (watching TV or on the computer) and that's really the only time she shows interest. I'll let her sniff the tail end, at which point she kind of goes, "oh, it's that thing again. whatever." and either wanders off, or wants to sit on my lap.

I generally keep their heads away from her, but in their wanderings, they slither over her if she's in my lap. She sometimes doesn't care for that and will run off. :D

Ryuu is the only one I trust if he wants to nuzzle in with her, as he was raised from a baby with her and knows her scent nearly as well as mine, and knows she's not a threat. He seems to always want to go for her belly and snuggle in! I still keep their faces away from each other though, just in case.

I keep them separate only because I have a couple tanks with heat lights on them and cats like to lay on tanks and nock things over.

My cats are split in the middle; one doesn't care (when I tell her not to come by he snake she hides in the other room). My other cat becomes more interested with each scolding

Re: So Who Has Cats and Snakes?
I have cats and snakes. I don't ever let them "interact". The cats really pay no mind to the snakes. I do have to keep an eye out when I have them out as the cats will jump up on the couch to lay down. The only one remotely interested is the kitten. She has to be there in the middle when I clean and feed. But I think that mostly is because she has to be at the center of anything you do, and she could care less about the snakes themselves. She just has to lay in the middle and " supervise". With the ocassional rat sniffing. But when the snakes are out, I keep them away from me.

I have 3 cats. My oldest is blind and doesn't seem to know or care. My youngest is just curious especially at feeding time. My middle one though I have to keep an eye out for. If I am holding one of my snakes, I have to keep watch if DK is around. He is my hunter.

My cat wasn't ever very interested in the snakes. When I had one out, sometimes she or one of the dogs would want to see, and I'd let them sniff it's tail, and then they lose interest and walk off.

The only thing i'd worry over is if the cat can open the snake's enclosure. If not, you're probably fine. And of course, don't stick a snake into the cat's face or anything.

My kitten is more interested in my beardie than my python. It's more recognizable as a living creature, I think, and therefore more "hunt able". When I'm handling either reptile I keep the cats at a distance, but I worry about it a little less with Magnus since he's not what my cats consider typical-looking prey. Most of the time they don't actually notice that I'm handling him if they curl up next to me while he's in my hands or pocket. I sure wouldn't give them "playtime" but as long as I'm staying vigilant I don't worry too much about either animals' safety.

When in my enclosures only one of my two cats likes to watch the snakes slither around. But when the snake is out, they are both highly interested. They are more interested when I have live feeders in there little tank.
