Mine is nothing fancy! I made it out of a 120 qt cooler. Heat tape is on the bottom and you can see the fan in the center. It can hold 4 clutches the way it is, but if I shift around and rearrange the water bottles, I can get 8 in there. The box in there sadly has no eggs (darn girls have yet to ovulate)... :( It's a test box that I was experimenting with vermiculite/water ratios and press-n-seal. The incubator has been on since February. It takes a while for temps to stabilize so I didn't want to shut it off. Now that it's stabilized, it holds temps AMAZINGLY. It's hooked up to a Herpstat 2.

Just one t-stat and the variance is 1.5 to 2 degrees from top to bottom which is completely fine.

No I did not, there is a company here in Germany that builds incubators like that, I bought it used off a fellow BP breeder.

I realize the purpose of the water bottles is to hold heat if the electricity fails. My question is, are they really necessary? They can only hold it for a short time and it's not like they emit heat. Also for those with smaller incubators and coolers it seems like a sacrifice of space that could hold extra clutches. I am in the beginning stages of planning an incubator and was curious about this.

I'll give you a little story about my experience with water bottles. My incubator is on page 2 I think. I'm using a cooler. For the record, I was NOT incubating a clutch but during the electricity failure, I was monitoring temps and taking a little data.
About two weeks ago, I lost power for 7 hours. I have a full case of water bottles in my incubator with my thermostat set at 90* (inside the egg tubs is 88*). I also live in Houston, TX and it's summertime, so the outside temps were about 90* most of the afternoon making my snake room about 84-85*. By the end of the 7 hour power loss, my incubator was still at 86* and heated back up within an hour.
It's not that water bottles emit heat, but water holds eat and when the air temperature falls below the temp of the water, there is transfer of heat from the warm bottles to the colder air. This is what helps the air temps return to normal quicker. If I had to choose, I would rather lose space for 1 clutch and know that if my power goes out, my incubator will stay hotter for longer time then cut corners and not put any water in. But that's my own personal chioce. No one says you HAVE to have water bottles in there. It's simply a suggestion because it really does work.
