Get a male, and have it probed. If you're venturing into burms, and you know you're ready, the best thing you could get is a male.

This also belongs in the giant python forum....

It's hard to know which things to tell you in additon to what you know, without knowing what it is you know. Have I made myself clear?

Do you have any specific questions about burm care and/or responsibility?

Well, Rusty has a 17 or 18' male....so be sure that you realize they can get HUGE...even the males can, although as a general rule, they are smaller than the females.

Also, as a general rule, they are very laid-back and easy-going snakes. Of course there are exceptions to that rule, but for the most part, they are very docile snakes. Keep in mind they DO have a very strong feeding response. A feeding error is NOT something you want to have happen with a burm!

Do you have a partner that will always be around to help you care for it? Once they get over about 8', it is in no way safe for a single person to handle...especially during feeding time. It's not safe for the keeper or the snake. I say the keeper for obvious reasons...but it's also not safe for the snake because a single person is not capable of properly supporting the body, and you could injure it by trying to lug it around by yourself.

As for whether it is a good choice....that is entirely dependent on you. Your maturity level, your level of responsibility, where you live now and where you plan to live in the future...and many other things like that. Keep in mind that the rescues are FULL of burms who have been abandoned by people who can no longer take care of them. If you can be sure you have the ability AND the commitment to not become one of those many who abandon their giant snakes...then maybe it's a good choice for you.

i also want a burm, but wont get one for a while. males get smaller then females. i heard they have a good temperment but an excellant feeding response, which if cared for wrong could lead to a feeding error. i heard their the best giant snake to own. if you get one, you will need a custom made enclosure. make sure to have 2 different doors. one for feeding purposes and one for handling purposes. this way it doesnt get use to eating everytime you open the door. other people can tell you more. hope i helped

That picture turned me away from even thinking about owning a burmese python or any large snake for that matter. That poop is nearly 3ft long.

That IS a very impressive picture....but honestly...it wouldn't be all that different from cleaning up after a horse or something. Just shaped a little differently. Need a shovel either way!
