    New T's!
I've wanted a B. smithi (Mexican redknee) and B. beohmei (Mexican fireleg) for a while but unfortunately didn't really think of it until after our last reptile show and our next isn't until November. Finding them locally was proving difficult or overpriced so Mike41793 was kind enough to pick some up for me at the reptile show over there last weekend and ship them to me. He grabbed a Nhandu chromatus (Brazilian red and white) as well, another species I've been wanting.

Mike did an AWESOME job packing them, unfortunately I didn't get many pics of their packing, as I was more concerned with checking that they were were healthy and alive.

    Soooo.... T's!!!

The B. smithi and Nhandu chromatus are TINY, this is the first time I've actually needed to feed fruit flies.
They were packed inside straws to keep them safe. The straws were inside vials and surrounded by paper towel. Very safe for the tiny critters.

I shooed'd the little Nhandu chromatus out with a piece of floss and he ran onto the outside of the straw:

He looks huge in this pic, but when he was inside the straw, regular bendy straw sized straw, it was cavernous to his size.

Shooed out the B. Smithi the same way:
    https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X...w+T%2527s+-+38
He also looks huge, he's the same size as the other sling, think like 1/4 the size around of a pencil eraser, really freaking tiny. He took a fruit fly for me later the night they arrived, he's a little trooper!

The B. boehmei was a spaz but luckily I got him to spaz straight into his new lil home:

    https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-a...w+T%2527s+-+28
He's muuuuch bigger than the other two. He was inside a paper towel "burrow" inside a vial with a paper towel cap on the ends.

Here's the lil jars I used:

    Only herpers

So, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, MIKE!!!!!! and THANK YOU, 3skulls for your shipping advice!!!! You guys are awesome!

I'm so glad they arrived safely! I was worried that those stupidly high AZ temps would cook em lol.

EDIT: your finger nails look nice btw :gj:

Same! I get really apprehensive when it comes to any animal I wouldn't be able to immediately see were it to get loose.

Interesting critters though, I bet it's fun to watch them grow up. :P

Yea, they're itty bitty. I did everything inside a 15qt tub so if they happened to run away or something they couldn't dip off and get lost. Long as they're in their little jars with tiny air holes they won't get lost lol.

Lol thanks, Mike. It's kinda cool having nails for once. I was a bit... apprehensive about shipping too, but they seem fine. Great job, dude!

And yep, I love watching them grow up. I told Mike I like em tiny, he took me VERY literal lol.

I love getting them when they are tiny too :)

    Congrats on the new pickups.

Fruit flies are a pain in the bum.
I use a straw to suck up 2-3 at a time. Keeps them from jumping around everywhere.

If you don't want to do the fruit flies. They will take dead pinheads with no problem.

    Congrats again!

Yea, it was horrible, I barely opened the jar and they came like pouring out. I was told you can put them in the fridge for a couple minutes and they'll slow way down while they're cold?

Oh God, they spill themselves. They just come crawling out as soon as you barely lift the lid

Poke a hole in the cup, pick them off as they crawl out, slide the coin over the hole. The straw trick has been the best thing for me. I hate Fruit Flies.

You can slow them down but they warm back up really quick.

Or just cut them up a cricket.

    Re: New T's!
Neat! Although I'd be scared the quarter would get moved or something and I'd be overrun by fruit flies lol. That could work though.

They actually slowed down long enough for me to feed the two that need them.

Yea, Idk, I've just never tried feeding dead. And I'm out of crickets since everything else is on roaches.

Oh I plug the hole when not in use :p
Yeah feeding just 2 isn't that bad, you can get them before they warm back up.

You can cut up roaches too. They will eat what they need.

But... They don't want to scavenge, they're wild predatory beasts!

Oh lol, I sort of thought the quarter was how you plugged it, I'm like "that sounds a bit risky..."

Are those curly winged or vestigial winged fruit flies? The completely wingless fruit flies are much easier to contain. I used to have true wingless flies, it was like dealing with ants. Just shake them down and tap them into a cup to feed from. Unfortunately I allowed them to die out. I recently picked up a colony of the curly winged flies and they're a MUCH bigger pain to deal with. They only fly a couple of inches but it's enough, they do this hop/fly thing that lets them spread out pretty quick. The true wingless flies will hop a little bit but it's not as much of a problem.

Yea, I like the B. smithi's lil black butt-spot. I can't wait to see them start getting their colors. I freaking LOVE them!

Um lol honestly I'm not too fruit fly knowledge. They're the ones they sell at Petco. The jar says they're Drosophila melanogaster. I looked that up and it said "common fruit fly." They don't seem to fly at all, they just walk up stuff like freaking Spiderman.

Nicole, I used to breed poison dart frogs and I used both hydei (flightless) and melanogaster (wingless) fruitflies to feed them. The cultures were a pain at first, but my tip to you other than the straw idea which is pretty neat is to take your palm and tap the top about 10 times before opening the container, have everything ready to transfer before doing this and then open the lid, shake a few that crawl up top out and close the lid again. It takes some practice, but after a while you'll be a pro at it.
