I've been hearing lately that bps are not a good begginer snake. Is this really true? Because if yes, than, man, I really wanted one.
-
They are.... Assuming you get a CB baby and can provide proper care. Their personalities are top notch, there isn't a snake in the world that can compare.
I will never regret bp's. They are da bomb. You're prepared, go for it.
-
Oh, ok, I guess they were talking about impulse buys.
-
Great beginner snake as long as:
1-you get captive bred
2-make sure it is eating already (ask to see it eat-if already on f/t even better)
3-you get your setup together BEFORE bringing home your BP. It's a good idea to even post a pic of your setup with info (temps, humidity, dimensions, etc) for others to see and give you some advice on.
4-you are patient...don't be in such a hurry to get one before getting the setup just right and be prepared for them to go off feed.
5-do a lot of research
My BP was my first snake and he's the greatest!
-
They can be a good begginer snake if you are well informed, have the proper settup, and are mature enough to accept the responsibility of owning a snake.
*wow im starting to sound like my dad*
If you do your research you will do great. The other thread headed in the direction it did because the poster was not in anyway mature enough to handle a ball.
-
Ok, i've done most of the stuff on the list. Except # 2.
-
I guess it depends on the "beginner". If you're inexperienced but mature and responsible, you'll be fine. This didn't seem to be the case with another "beginner" here.
-
The answer to that is YES and NO. The reasons are this. Bp's can be aweful picky eaters, do require strict environmental control and so on. A person must ask themselves if they are willing to put the time and effort and dedication into the bp itself. And you must be honest with yourself on if you plan on putting in the dedication and time and effort. Can bp's be good beginner snakes, YES absolutely, for the right person! All this is really up to you. It is not really for anyone but you to decide. My first snakes were king and corn snakes and ribbon snakes and such... I am now 30 years old, have some experience and knowledge- be it not all, and I am still learning... however, I do very much enjoy the time it takes, attention, care and such that my ball pythons require..do I regret getting my bp's- heck no! Do I feel I am in over my head- heck no! Would a bp been good for me as MY first snake- absolutely not, and only cause back then I was really not willing to put in the dedication and time they need..and the expense in the long run. It is all about being honest with yourself about your abilities and what you are willing to do for that animal. In any case, I wish you good luck in your decision, if you do get one, please feel free to come back and continue to ask questions, thats what we are here for, and please share pics when you can as we ALL enjoy them!

Well I was reading the topic; NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BALL PYTHONS or something like that.
-
It really freaked me out because everone was tlaking about how picky they are and stuff.
-
I agree with Jeanne. I dont think a ball python would have been good for my first snake. Why? Because I didnt take the time to look into the proper husbandry before buy my first herp. I didnt realize there was that much to it. (lucky thing my first herp was a corn snake) You seem to be willing to become informed before jumping into it and that is great. Just make sure you are ready for it :)
-
I am, i'm still looking at every care sheet and post about them I can.
-
I think you'll be fine. People who are willing to do the research and get the setup right and realize that total cost of ownership does not equal price of snake are headed in the right direction. It's like people who get puppies and have looked into what breeds might be suitable, what the space and activity requirements are, have read up on or otherwise studied how to train puppies, and are prepared for the commitment, versus people who go, "What a cute puppy! I want it!" and take it home not thinking about the fact that the particular dog they brought home is going to be 75+ lbs and have a heavy coat and be miserable in their efficiency apartment in South Florida. Some people are just more prepared to be good pet owners, period. The others can be if they have the willingness to become so.

IMO BP`s arent a good choice for beginners "overall" as per most of the negitives traits already explained within the thread. Not to discourage you or anyone else from attempting it or chooseing one. Theres just so "many" other snakes that are more "forgiving"and much more "socialbly rewarding" then BP`s will ever be and for a novice herper this "reward" return will mature the dilagence needed to transform the keeper from Curious to Addicted ,but only if another choice besides a BP is used to break out or in with.
There`s many hardcore BP fans that know nothing but BP and their exclusive/content bieng keepers of and they`ll argue till hell wont have it over their babys.BP`s are indeed wierd creatures (kinda like watching cars rust or grass grow) We love our two BP`s and their here for the long run and will be spoiled like the rest.
But as per the thread topic NO,I would instead inform inquisitive potential owners of other more rewarding/exciting options besides Ball`s.
You also made notation to "Freaked Out" why is that ? I hope I`m wrong but is that "doubt"?(self questioning bad choice) or is it that your just completely "eat-up"(consumed) with the chance to own one of Gods coolest creatures THE SNAKE !?!

I meant freaked out as is; now after all the research and stuff I done I now find out that they are not a good begginer snake.
-
everyone stated good stuff above, if you have done the research than you will do fine- the fact that you are paranoid about and/or expecting feeding problems is a very good sign haha. Just have the set-up done and functioning before you recieve your snake (so as to have any humidity/temp problems settled by the time the snake arrives, taking away some stress) and stick around the forums and don't ever stop learning. I think that you would make a good BP keeper, but this is always a good conversation just BE ABSOLUTELY sure you are getting a FEEDING CAPTIVE BRED... actually I would go as far to say CBB BP. Good question! :)
