Why Human Race! Why!
So I go to school at an online art class, right? Well right now I'm doing perspective drawing and we had to choose some things in the room to draw without using perspective to do it, practicing sighting and what not. Well, we write critiques about eachothers work. The critique I got was upsetting, instead of focusing on my artwork (only saying that it would have looked better with a background which I had none in the room) she said how gross it was that I have snakes and thanked me for not actually showing my snakes in the pictures.
I was appalled, insulted, and I really felt angry at the person. How dare she judge me, someone who she's never met before, because I have snakes and on top of which THANK ME for not showing the snakes in the photographs of the item we were drawing. Oh I was so mad.
Considering a lot of my art is actually from my snakes or inspired by snakes, I was irritated. So I simply replied: "I'm sorry you feel the need to express your hatred for snakes in front of a reptile enthusiast who owns two of her own. Just so you know Pet Snakes are nothing to be fearful of, and instead they are beautiful and friendly critters to hold and view. I'm sorry you fear them, and further more I'm sorry you had to THANK ME for not showing off what I am very proud of."
I hate people.

Some people lack a filter between their brains and their mouths (or keyboards), and that lets their irrational prejudices run wild. Obviously what she said was stupid, insulting, and shortsighted, but really, you should just move on and try not to let it bother you. How much does the opinion of one random stranger mean, anyway?
-
Don't let it get to you, it may make you mad but what can you do? it's honestly sad that people do that. but in a way you might not like how another person likes birds. any ways, did you draw that second picture? the really bold one of the snake? if so that's amazing :)

Re: Why Human Race! Why!
Can't believe the ignorance if some people. I work at PETsMART and I ask people daily why they're afraid of snakes. I never get a straight answer so I tell them they have no reason to be afraid. They say "ewwww" at the mention of them. I say "ewwww" at the dogs and cats that lick their butt holes, but no one is afraid of them. Irritated rant done.

To paraphrase (or qoute) a fellow vet on here in another thread about fear of snakes this morning: people are idiots.

This image you posted is of the black/white snake is stunning. This is yours? It's beautiful!!

Heh..I've gotten that one before. "Aren't you afraid they're going to bite you?"
........"are you afraid of a cat or dog biting you?...or even a bird?"
All animals bite. What makes a snake any different, is beyond me..

People who are ignorant to certain things such as snakes form an ignorant opinion. I was also very fearful of snakes up until about a year ago so I know how some feel. But someone took the time to educate me and put a snake in my hand and let me see what an awesome creature a snake really is. Now im hooked! So from my own past fearful experience I try to educate people and show them how great snakes are. Thats all you can do, don't get upset with them. Help them, someone took the time to help me so I feel obligated to do the same for others who are where I once was. Im just saying don't judge them as quickly as they judged you.

It's possible that it may just be innate in some way, there have been studies to try to see if people can be classically conditioned to develop adverse responses to different stimuli and snakes, spiders, things like that are easy to condition while other stimuli such as flowers. It is possible therefore that the aversion we witness in others may be due to evolutionarily influenced aversion. Ever notice how people tend to be deathly afraid of spiders but not so much with cars or electricity? Anyway, just food for thought.

Re: Why Human Race! Why!
People can be ignorant at times. It's just best to move on.
Just some more food for thought though: my sister isn't afraid of snakes, she's got a pattern phobia for scales. I have a pattern phobia of holes. We're both a little off like that, ha ha! My snakes don't scare her, it's just their skin.
Though it is annoying when people say "ew, why do you have snakes?"
I just feel like saying "because I like them, idiot."

When I find out people don't like snakes, my opinion of them lowers. If you don't like my snakes, don't whine about it. I don't whine about YOUR pets, habits, hobbies, etc.

Re: Why Human Race! Why!
OP, perhaps you should drop a word to the instructor about this. He needs to remind the students that the purpose of the critique needs to focus (I'm assuming, never been an artist!) on the artists work and the purpose behind the exercise, and not the subject matter the artist chose for the work.
Otherwise, anyone who draws anything remotely scary or controversial, whether it's a snake, spider, firearm, or the boogie-man, is not going to get an honest assessment.

What fascinates me about snakes, is actually a good answer to this. They bite you without any hands or feet to jump at you with.
Lol.

#1 Why would you care about their opinion of you and your hobby and interests?
#2 It was rude. People are often rude. It'll happen more in life as you go along.
#3 Make sure that more of your artwork includes your snakes from now on... just for them. I'd make EVERY artwork include snakes somehow, just because.
#4 Rant about it on site like here where people understand your frustrations in people thinking your pets are "icky". We understand. Person was stupid. Arg arg. Move on.
Look at some pics of cool reptiles. Drink some hot cocoa. Relax.

Re: Why Human Race! Why!
That is really awful...but for an ART TEACHER to say that, is even worse. Imo, art is waaay too subjective to even be taught as a subject in a school. I was an art major, but left the school because of how awful the teachers were. Beauty is different for everyone. Wonderful pieces, btw.
