    hydrofarm thermostat Question
Ok so bps will get rack and be plugged into ranco, so with my endless supply of 20 Longs, I will be keeping a few kings and milks in them. ok, So i have heard some people just pluggin in the one UTH to the stat, but can i plug a surge into it. I was thinking 4x 20 longs into the surge then into hydrofarm thermostat. would that be ok.

I would not recommend this treatment at all. I would actually not suggest a hydrofarm at all they have poor accuracy (+/- 4ºF) , a fairly large hysteresis (3ºF) and swing.

    Re: hydrofarm thermostat Question
Just do some research. I use this tstat to run a 17" UTH, but it's only one. Find out what the maximum wattage is that the hydrofarm can hold and stay under that. Make sure all of the UTHs are the same size/wattage. It should work OK as long as you monitor your temps well.

    hydrofarm thermostat Question
I currently have herpstats controlling all my UTH's but have used hydrofarms in the past and would recommend them if you on a budget. If you do use a hydrofarm I would just recommend to use a thermometer that can confirm the temp range your UTH is putting out.

You may get some temp variation using the power strip so you will have to play with it to get a happy medium.

There are thousands of hydrofarm users out there that do not have any problems with them. ;)

Hydrofarm fell out of favor with me when the first one I bought failed after just a few months of use. I was lucky and had it paired with a uth that stayed at lower temps than most so no harm was done.

I would never plug a strip into a Hydrofarm tstat. I would only set up tanks like that with a good quality tstat.

I would feel terrible if I lost several animals because I saved $60 and went cheap on a tstat. I will never go cheap on a tstat again. Once was enough.

thanks, after searching and ready about them, atm i only have one bp and one corn, I will through put corn on hydrofarm and well bp is on ranco, I knew from the beginning i was gonna have to bite the bullet, I may get a herpstat 2, to control them all in one stat. but the hydro will be back up till i start my project. wsh could find a good herstat used :)

do they fail on or off, or is there no way to tell, id rather have a cold corn since my rep room is 80 than a scorched corn

Mine failed ON. It was blinking and displaying strange things but only sending sporadic power to the uth so in my case it didn't overheat. I also do know when it started this so there is a chance I found it soon after it went crazy and it didn't get a chance to overheat. I can not say for sure though.

I think your setup plan is a good choice for the situation.

I think Herpstat might be the only t-stat that is guaranteed to fail in the off position? Don't quote me on that but I think that's a safety feature that others can't guarantee at this point, even though they may fail in the off position some or most of the time.

    hydrofarm thermostat Question
Accuracy is slippery it means different things to different people. I am fussy I will simply not accept more than one degree off of correct.

I suggested the rescue I work for buy some (7 i think) After they arrived we checked and rejected them as unacceptable. I feeling bad paid for them. I ended up with a few more later. Of the 12 of them 2 were beyond the specs (4 degrees off) it was quite a feat to get them returned.

You get what you pay for. To save 60$ you get poor accuracy. I would really suggest an accurate thermometer with it! Personally one with better specs than +\- 1 degree f sadly this is going to cost much more than 60$.

I didn't mean spend $60 on a tstat. I was saying that spending the $30 on a hydrofarm when you could spend $60 more and get the intro Herpstat for a $100 is a better decision. The Herpstat will last and works out being cheaper in the long run. Sorry if I want clear.

lol guys, i understand, see i searched them in forum search and intually got great reviews. after going back and looking at other herp forums and this one aswell, well they seem to suck, time will tell when i get it, as said above herpstat 2(lets me control 2x dif temps, I belive, if i remmeber right) will be in future atm i know my ranco is acurite to the nth. acurite and heat gun tells me that. so i will use ranco on bps and if hydro works, i will use it on corn, till get cash for herpstat 2

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. My hydrofarm works great. I've used it for over 6 months on 2 different UTHs and never had an issue. It puts out whatever temp I set it to.

You will love the Herpstat. I have the 1 & 4. The four is just simply amazing, it does everything.

I've got two that have been running great for the last three months I've had them. Eventually I'll get a herpstat.

My Herpstat 1 arrived today for the rack that's getting built this weekend. Can't wait to use it. The Hydrofarm will be kept in reserve for quarantine cages. And I know a Herpstat 2 is in my future sooner or later.

Far as I know it should work just like a hydrofarm. Plug in heat source, plug tstat into wall, set temp, check at intervals to make sure temps are good.

Yes you just plug in the probe make a few settings and you have full proportional control. I would suggest that the best use of of a hydrofarm is a failsafe. herpstats are more likely to fail off but that is not a certainty just a good chance.
