Yup. They're real. We have many different kinds and subspecies of garters here. And different looks for certain locations.
Check out the one from Sonoma Country. Looks identical to the one pictured.

They look relatively the same, but they have the horizontal striping pattern.
And the other one is more checkered.

I spent about 6 months in Petaluma back in the early 90's...wish I would have gotten in San Fran more, but alas, I was without a car at the time...

Hey, a face that knows Petaluma! My town isn't entirely obscure.
The CA Garters are really great, I really wish it were legal to keep them though. I caught a few last summer while field herping though, I'm hoping I can find some more this season as well. :D

You cannot own one legally. They are endangered.
But they are found in San Mateo County in the SF Bay Area if you wanted to do some California field herping.
