FIRE at Boas and Balls in Colorado
Breaking news from today, there has been a devastating fire at the home of Lynn Kubic, owner of Boas and Balls, and proprietor of the Rocky Mountain Reptile Expo in Colorado.
Her home is a complete loss, and thousands of animals have been lost as well. No new updates at this time about any specific reptiles saved from the fire. 4 dogs died as well. Human beings all appear to be ok, so that is a piece of good news.
Fires hit especially close to home for us at Pro Exotics. Our lives were certainly redirected in late 2011. I hate to see this again.
More info at the links, we will continue to post updates as they come in:

That's devastating... At least the people were alright and from the report, sounds like there are some reptilian survivors as well. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Re: FIRE at Boas and Balls in Colorado
I feel terrible for them. I hope we can learn from any mistakes that were made. How did the fire start?
-
That is awful!
I'm glad the family is safe and the some of the reptiles, but this is all very sad. :(

If they need anything, please do not hesitate to call us.

FIRE at Boas and Balls in Colorado
That's never good! Sad to hear they lost so much. Fire is an unforgiving beast, I'm glad they were able to make it out safe at the very least.

Auctions are good for raising cash. Just gotta get people to donate the desired items. Throw in some good looking balls be hard not to bid.

will help any way I can even if I am broke , I bet my wife will say the same thing too.

I heard they lost 5 dogs but a majority of the snakes ended up fine after the fire was put out.
-
Yeah I just looked it up again. The snakes are fine but he house was lost as well as 5 dogs.

Hate to hear this.
Prayers go out to them!

Wow this is just right in my backyard! It is very sad news, I hope someone local here in Denver can have some sort of auction or fundraiser for them, maybe even at the reptile expo if it still going to be held in May. Very sad story, I would be devistated. I would love to donate if there is something that goes on!

Waiting to hear updates. My concern is with the smoke and inhalation damage. In the Pro Exotics fire we had about a dozen snakes survive the day, but all then passed within two weeks from respiratory damage. Double heartbreak...

Wow, that is sad. I'm glad the family is at least ok.

Re: FIRE at Boas and Balls in Colorado
That's terrible! Glad to hear no people were lost but that's still just horrible. Really hope the snakes continue to be fine, they and birds both have such delicate respiratory systems :/
-
the snakes might of lucked out with the fire in garage and the roof areas. it sound like the basement area was minor smoke/water damage. I betting that it possible the smoke and natural draft of a basement may of limited the smoke issue since it tends to rise with heat. ( it why they always tell you to hug the floor as your crawl out of a burning building the cooler/freshest air at the bottom .

How horrible. Sucks and there is simply nothing that you can do about it, making the feeling even worse. I am gald to hear that the snakes may have lucked out, but sorry for the dogs. I hope that, aside from the dogs, nothing else was lost that cannot be replaced with a check from the insurance company. I'm not far, just down in the Springs. Please let me know if I can help in any way at all.

Yes Robyn you are right.
So far I have lost about 70 of the bp's, my leachies, and several chameleons. Most of the bp's drowned because of the water to put out the fire.
Now there is a lot with ri, and we are treating them, I have lost some from this.
It has been hard and time consuming to get there cages moved and heat re-set up. A lot of the thermostats were damaged by water or probes pulled out when the cages were moved out of the house. Thank god for the firefighters, there was a lot of them helping caring cages out and loading them onto the two skid steers to move them. It took 5+ hours to pull all the snakes and move them to our rodent barn. Then two days and a u-hall to move them to one of our Jurassic pet stores.
Now that they all have heat again I hope we keep the losses to a minimum.
Sadly we did not have business insurance, but on the bright side I have had 2 clutches of baby boas born since the show and one clutch of bp eggs laid. I don't have an incubator anymore so that is the next hurtle to go over.
The fire was started in the garage. The fire investigators have determined it was a dear mouse chewing a wire on my silk screen heaters cord.
The hardest loss for us right now has been the dogs. You can see some of the on www.greatwhitegoldens.com.
We are still in a hotel and it sucks. I hope we can find a rental soon.
Best news is we got the go ahead to start the rebuild.

Re: FIRE at Boas and Balls in Colorado
I'm so sorry for your loss and glad to hear that some animals were able to be saved. It sounds like you handled this situation better than most people would be able to, kudos for being so proactive and good luck on the road to recovery.

This is just heart breaking. :( :( I don't even know what to say.
I am so so sorry for the loss of your pups. That is just devastating. They were so beautiful!!
And what a beautiful house!! :(
I am glad that you were able to save some of the animals.
I'll be thinking about you guys!!

I can't imagine losing 5 dogs, so sorry about that.
Sorry to hear of the aftermath with respiratory issues as well. Prolonging the loss only makes it harder. Best of luck in getting your collection on stable healthy footing Lynn.

Re: FIRE at Boas and Balls in Colorado
I didn't even know white golden retrievers existed. I'm so so sorry for the loss of your fuzzy and scaly family members. I'm glad to hear that you have new babies on the way though. May they bring you cheer.
-
I am very sorry for you in your great loss. It breaks my heart to think of what you have been through and still must face ahead. I am glad you made it out safely. And I am glad you have decided to rebuild your home, your lives and your dreams.
When the Pro Exotics fire happened, I told Robyn when he was ready to begin collecting snakes I had a baby of his choice waiting for him and the PE gang. Now of course we know the guys aren't going to get back into breeding, and that's fine. So, I extend my offer to you. When you are ready to begin collecting snakes again, contact me and I will send you pictures of any baby's I currently have, and the baby of your choice is yours to help you begin anew. It's not a lot, but I want to help you in any way that I can.
I wish you all the best.
