New gaboons.
Finally after almost 2 years of searching I have found a new pair of gaboons to add to the collection. I had been holding out for Bitis Gabonica. But after I saw these I just couldn't resist. :) I can't even begin to say how happy I am to finally have not 1 but a pair of spectacular Gab's back in the collection. And to top it all off this now means that I have now kept 4 of the 5 large Bitis. All that's left is bitis parviocula; maybe one day.
At any rate here they are....
My new pair of West African Gaboons (bitis rhinoceros)

Yup. You are correct! You can get permits and such to be able to keep them. Only certain places allow that tho.

New gaboons.
Gaboons are the only hot I'd ever consider keeping, but we're not allowed hots here.
Super gorgeous!!

Huh, better? Not a chance lol. Still absolutly amazing? Absolutly. :D
It's hard to capture there true colours with an iPhone, especially since it has no zoom feature lol. I'm going to get a buddy to come by with a good camera and see if I can get some decent pictures. The female is so pink! Can't wait to see what she looks like as an adult. And hopefully not an 8' adult lol.

Haha, I'm a rhinoceros man as you know.
Are these CB 12?
Mate, I'm sure my female is going to be massive. I only feed her once every 3 weeks, and she's double the size of her siblings that my friends have lol.

Yep cb 12's. one owner and he's takin amazing care of them. Could tell he was sad to let them go. But with things he's got going on in his life just couldn't keep them. Made me promise if I ever breed them that I call him first though lol. They've been feed small meals weekly and are still siting under 12". I'm going to keep them on that schedule for awhile. Then maybe move them up to small rats every couple of weeks. Growing Bitis slow as I'm sure you know is one of the important keys to success with them.

Indeed, I fed mine every 10 days for the first six months. Now I'm feeding them every 14-21 days. But i will and have left them 4-5 weeks between feeds, i like to keep my snakes keen and not in a particular routine. Female is now on rat pups, male fuzzy mice.
She's been fed less than yours, and she's 23". She's going to be at least 6 ft I think.

i absolutely love the patterns on these things. i don't think i'll ever own a hot, but if i did, it would definitely be a gaboon. :gj:

Thought so. Those are gorgeous snakes and I'd love to keep one, or maybe even a rattler, but how would I get a permit for one? And just HOW venomous are they? Do you keep anti-venom in the house just in case? I'd do tons of research on a species before I got one of course. Especially a hot. Congrats on the gorgeous new addition though. I'm jealous. Lol.

The legal side of hots varies from place to place. The only permit system I am aware of in the US is in the state of Florida. I know most if not all states have there own legislation ranging from complete bans to almost none. So do your home work for where you live and make sure your even allowed to keep the animals first. I do not stock antivenom in the house, but there is an antivenom bank in ontario so Samir polyvenant is available should the need come up. Anti venom can be almost or even more dangerous than the snake bite its self because many people suffer allergic reactions to the serum and anaphylactic shock can be lethal in just a few minutes if not treated. So antivenom should never be administered out side of a hospital or at least somewhere that a medical professional can monitor your vitals and be able to immediately deal with any complications. How venomous are they? A bite from any size gaboon is a life threatening situation. But a full on bite from an adult could very easily be fatal even with prompt treatment. Definatly not a snake you want to take liberties, or make mistakes with.
