A ball python bite
I just got a ball python a few weeks ago and I was just wondering how much a bite hurts? Cause he is going into shed and I'm going to need to put him in a smaller container so I can keep the humidity up. And I picked him up once just to check on him and I swore he was going to bite me lol so I put him back in the tank. And for some reason I think it is going to hurt like hell and wont get him off of me.

think about a pit bull bite, then take away all the pain, blood, reduce puncture sizes to pinholes over a vastly smaller area, and take away the legs and pulling behavior. If the snake does hold on then try using a little bit of water to get it to let go. You can google videos of bp bites and see that the worst part about them is your apprehension.
-
Have you ever been bitten by a hamster? A hamster bite is 1000000 times worse than even an adult bp bite. Lol I've been bitten by babies before and didn't even realize until I saw a teeny weeny spot of blood on my hand. Trust me friend you have nothing to worry about :)

Lol thanks. I'm kinda laughing now cause you guys make it seem like its nothing lol. Thanks everyone. And ive never owned or got bit my a hamster lol.

Re: A ball python bite
I tell people at my PETsMART that if they've been bit by a cat then they've felt worse pain and damage than a ball python can deliver.
-
The strike is scarier then the actual bite, once you have actually been bitten (My ball has never actually tagged me) you will feel silly that you were ever nervous about it.
Dont feel bad though, Everyone is worried about it until it actually happends.

Yeah a good comparison is a cat scratch, which is worse than a bp bite.
But don't worry when I got my first snake I was SO nervous I was going to get bitten, I've never been tagged by any of my own snakes, but many others since I work at an exotic pet shop. A ball python bite is the least painful of most snakes.

Re: A ball python bite
A paper cut hurts much worse in my opinion.

Re: A ball python bite
Yeah, you may not even know the little ones did it. But for the pin pricks of blood. I have a cut from the serrated egde of the clingwrap right now, that hurts a heck of a lot more!

I would rather take bites from all my snakes at the same time then get tagged once by a small angry rat. most times once you wipe away the blood you can't tell where you got bit.

Re: A ball python bite
Let's see, I've been bit by a small baby ball python (she was about 250 grams), a smaller brb and a 6-7 ft yellow anaconda. All of which, put together, hurt less than when I get scratched by one of my cats...we make it sound like its nothing because it really is nothing lol. This doesn't mean go sticking your hand in to find out, as you own a ball, its going to happen eventually. All I can say is even if yours doesn't like you touching its head, do it anyway, all mine I have done this with and now they act like a dog when you scratch the right spot, right behind the ear. ;)

I concur, the strike is scarier than the pain. I still jump when I'm tong-feeding my boy, and my hand is nowhere near him-- the only time he ever tagged me though, it honestly felt like I got my finger slightly stuck in a zipper. Not bad at all. I was sort of all smiles, actually, 'cause it's gonna happen some time, so you gotta have that "first bite" lol

Re: A ball python bite
I got my first "nip" a couple weeks ago. It got my adrenaline flowing super hard. I was excited that it finally happened. And at the same time I was disappointed that it left two tiny punctures that were so small I couldn't photo it to post here. Guess I'm not in the club yet. :)

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who sort of enjoyed the experience! :gj:

nothing to worry about really, i have been tagged by a few different reptiles. the difference in the pain is if it was just a nip, or they hit and wrapped thinking your food. although both are not bad the hit and wrap can hurt though.

Cat bites are the worst

Re: A ball python bite
I've been bitten by an almost five foot female BP and an 11" Tokay Gecko... The Tokay Gecko bite hurt a lot more.
I promise that you have nothing to worry about.
-
I have been bit by hamsters, mice, rats, full out attacked by a cat, aggressive bite by a dog, mildly venomous spider.
I have a medium sized tattoo and many piercings.
ALL of those hurt WAY worse than a bite by a ball python!
My very first tag by a BP was 2 weeks ago and I got it right between the fingers.
I can promise you that I didnt even feel the bite LOL I heard him strike and didnt feel anything. I didnt realise I was bit until I saw the blood out of the corner of my eye.
So yah its so minuscule that most bites you dont even notice.

A ball python bite
Ive got bit by rodents which caused a lot more pain and bleeding. I had a hamster bite bleed for 2 hours. Snakes bites I wash off and usually cannot find the mark.

I believe someone once compared being bitten by a ball python to being attacked by velcro, which isn't far off in my experience :P

Re: A ball python bite
I wish I could answer this.
I'm still not a "real" python keeper as my balls and carpet have so far refused to bite me.
Actually, no captive snake has bitten me, just wild ones and I can tell you Northern Watersnakes hurt like a... nah they just scare the daylights out of you when they strike. And a Northern unhappy about being picked up will strike like crazy.

Re: A ball python bite
Tell the truth, guys! He's going to find out eventually anyway.
Truth is, you're gonna want to make sure you always go in with your non-dominant hand first!
(just kidding, it's nothing. If anything has ever bitten you, it was worse than a ball python)
-
Rodent bites are the worst bites through and through. Except maybe parrots. Oh God. They like to grab hard and shake. Can't be afraid of a little snake after that.
-
Re: A ball python bite
If you got bitten by ball python while blindfolded, i think you will only feel something is poking you, not biting you. because the bite it self almost not hurt at all
