Hi folks,
I just recieved this from Herp Digest, thought a few of you would find it interesting:
Increasingly Ordinances Regulating Private Possession of Exotic
Animals Are Enacted on Local Level
Created by the Animal Protection Institute, at
http://www.api4animals.org/375.htm you’ll find a partial list of cities
and counties that prohibit or strictly regulate the private possession
of certain exotic animals. Given the difficulty in researching every
city and county code, they have provided only a sampling. Still, its one
of the largest I’ve yet to find on the net. If you’re aware of a city
not listed please contact Nicole Paquette at API.
(Editor’s note: As you go through the list you’ll see that town
ordinances on the keeping of exotic or dangerous animals varies. What is legal
in one county could be illegal in a town within that county. Also the
government officials who write and enforce these rules also vary. It
could be the Zoning Board in one town, the Board of Health in another.
Keeping in mind that “ignorance is no excuse when breaking the law,”
anyone who wishes to keep herps as pets, to breed or even conduct a
scientific study, should investigate what exactly the laws are where they
live or work).
Thanks
Rusty

Very good information, Rusty. Thanks for reminding us. Especially those of us that move around a lot. I'll need to be sure and check on local regs every time we move. :( (At least my next city/county wasn't on that list!)
-
They skipped Georgia altogether! That's strange. Also, what is it with specifically banning "non-human primates" as pets? Does that mean it would be okie-dokie to keep a human as a pet?
-
Marcus (Fourfeathers) did it again!

ROTFLMAO!

You gotta love West Virginia. We just don't care what you keep.

Here's one with Georgia (Smynx gets credit on the find):

These are definatly not all the regulations, this is just a small sampling. My state CT is not even on it, but there are laws here. If anyone is in Ct or would like to know the "written" state laws (I do not have individual counties laws etc) just let me know.
It may be hard to find the laws pertaining to certain states or towns. I would highly recommend looking into it. (Maybe call your local wildlife officials, or dept. of health etc)The last thing you want is to be in love with your favorite snake, then haveing someone tell you you can no longer keep him.
Thanks
Rusty
Oh and I hope we can keep humans as pets, I just got done training mine..lol

Here is The City of San Antonio's ordinace reguarding non-poisonous snakes.
Sec. 5-9. Non-poisonous snakes.
Any owner, caretaker, or other person who keeps any non-poisonous snake over three (3) feet and/or fifteen (15) pounds, in addition to complying with all federal and state laws, regulations and permit regulations affecting such snake shall:
(a) Keep the snake at all times in a cage or enclosure of such size and construction and in a manner as to preclude the possibility of escape. Such enclosure shall be of such size as to permit the snake reasonable freedom of movement;
(b) Maintain enclosures and cages in a clean and sanitary manner at all times;
(c) Provide the snake with adequate food, water, shelter, and veterinary care;
(d) Keep the snake in such a manner so as not to threaten or annoy any person of normal sensitivity;
(e) Prevent unauthorized access to the snake through adequate safeguards;
(f) Make the snake facilities and equipment available for inspection upon request by the animal control veterinarian;
(g) Use only escape proof enclosures when transporting the snake.
All snakes shall be kept in compliance with the above requirements in (d), (e), and (f).
(Ord. No. 79180, § 1, 11-18-93)
Editor's note: Ord. No. 79180, § 1, repealed former § 5-9, relative to domestic animal permits, and enacted a new § 5-9 to read as herein set out. The provisions of former § 5-9 derived from Ord. No. 16116, § 2(A), adopted Sept. 27, 1951; Code 1959, § 6-8; and Ord. No. 33971, § 3, adopted Dec. 30, 1965.
The City of San Antonio must care about its snakes.

haha - thankfully I am literally about a three minutes from the official "Chicago" area- there is a herp shop just about two minutes away with bloods and corns and all kinds of colubrids and also BP's and BCI's ... the guy power feeds and doesn't offer hides for some but he keeps them in visions and temps and water are always good... the BP's generally hide under that lip below the sliding doors... I would correct him but he's bred bloods for years with success and he's way bigger, older, and more experienced than I... he is a huge pro-ponenet of feeding F/T though. He did once state that he keeps snakes for return on investment not to own as pets and while I disagree with much husbandry and definately the aforementioned statement of pure money - they are all healthy, eating, vet checked so .. I did comment about the hides once but it's his place you know. I'm trying to get a job there so I can talk him into changing some things or maybe even pay out of pocket for some hides.
