Yearling beardie breathing problems?

Notices lately my beardie has been slightly opening his mouth occasionally. Hopefully this is normal. I cut his lamp down to 100 degrees considering he might be a little warm or something.

Any thoughts?

Yep if he is simply opening his mouth and holding it open, he is releasing heat that has built up inside. Kinda like a dog panting :)

Should I maybe reduce his temps? His basking area is around 100

I checked it with a probe thermometer. It has a little give an goes anywhere from 99.8 to 104.2

Unless there's another male in his line of sight, it's heat. What's the ambient temp? Not on his hotspot, but in general?

Id have to agree. He is probably just releasing heat.
His heat source is pretty close to him.

This is just my personal preference but i like to up my bulb wattage so i can place it a little farther away from my basking spot so my beardies aren't in such a "direct" range of the heat source.

Well my beardies hot spot is about 102, and the temp on his cool side is about 83, sometimes he basks with his mouth wide open as if to say " I'm hot, but I don't feel like moving, so I'm gonna sit here with my mouth open" :) haha but no around 100 is good, if he gets too hot, he'll move.

Ambient temp ranges from 85 to 75 during the day on the cool side an 86 to 94 on the warm side. The rays of light at the point which is basks are 101.2 right now. That will stay that way throughout the day with small .1+'s or -'s.

I'm considering redoing his tank. As you can see right now it's just a rock and tree on slate tile. I have since then removed the tree as he's far too big for it to fit comfortably but still tries an occasionally falls.

Anyone have cheap ideas? It's a 40 gallon breeder.

Heat source is 13" away from him so it's not as close as you think.
