My big girl shed! Volta? Pics! :)
My big girl shed for the first time with us - I'm not sure if she is a Volta or not (input is welcome), but she is one big girl! I wanted to share pics of how big her shed is, and of course her pretty, fresh-shed self ;)

Is she a wild caught import? As far as I know Outback Reptiles is the only one that gets Volta Region girls.

Imports come from Volta region every year. It's a high dense ball python area in Ghana and tons of imports come in every year from there.

What exactly constitutes a Volta? I'm unsure of her age, she is approx. 5 ft. long and weighs 3300g. We got her just over a month ago and she has gained 300g, no power-feeding... we actually had to feed her smaller meals, because we didn't have big enough frozen rats for her.... I'm having a hard time finding any info on Voltas or Sub-Saharan Giants.

LOL right?? Thank you, her personality matches her looks! ;)
Sorry for the double post!

Wow - how tall are you? That is a long shed - even considering the fact that the shed is actually longer than the snake due to stretching :O

LOL that's what I thought too! I'm 5'3", her shed was over 6' and didn't include her head (it came off separately)! She's about 5', so her shed gained about a foot or so.

I'm still going to call her a Volta/Ghana giant. Her massive head is the giveaway. I wish I could get my girl feeding again.
Information on these ladies is sketchy and hard to find. I'm not sure why, if I had an 8' female ball python that weighed 8000 grams, I'd plaster the internet with her. I see many people who say they have 5000 plus gram females, but in many cases I'd really need to see the snake on a scale to believe it.
I know the two girls I have, although very close in weight and length, are very different in appearance.

Yeah that's what I think! At least some basic comparison or info on them, or tons of pics! lol There is so little info on them. I agree with you too, I could see a difference with your girls, too. I also have two big girls, but the other girl's head is more 'petite' than this girl's. I think she is a Volta, but wanted to see if anyone could give me any more input. :)

Her head does look quite large in the photo. I'm not sure how big your hand is though. If we took a normal females head and put it in my girlfriends tiny hands you'd think a 1500gram girl was a Volta :P. Maybe shoot Josh from Outback Reptiles a email with some pics and ask him.

Great idea! My hands are pretty average sized, not small but not huge. :) I think I'll try shooting him a message! Thanks!

LOL!!
Yes, there is a group of Ball Pythons that tend to grow larger than the typical Ball. It seems that maybe only the females get large like that...? Some call them Voltas or Sub-Saharan Giants. I'm having a hard time finding info on them. They grow larger without power-feeding or over feeding them, and tend to lay larger clutches of eggs. I'm not sure where my girl originally came from, so I have been trying to figure out if she is a Volta or not. It seems that she is, though :) She is about 5 feet long and weighs 3300g. I've had her for a little over a month and she has already gained 300g (and I haven't been power feeding her). :O

I don't know about Kimbly, but I've heard about the "Ghana Giants" for at least the last four years. I cannot remember now where it was I heard about them first, but the name was what made me curious. From what little I was able to find out, they are a very localized group. I know Outback Reptiles and a few others here in the states import them, as does at least one breeder in Germany. Although I have never seen one of this size, they are reported to grow up to 8' long and weigh 8000 grams if female. One of the prominent members here has a photograph she had taken of herself with a giant, and the snakes head was as large as her hand. I believe she said it was at least 5000 grams in the photo, and that was years ago.
Information on them is sketchy at best, why I don't pretend to know. I have seen several pictures of ball pythons whose heads are noticeably larger than those of similarly sized balls in peoples collections. The massive head size seems to be one of the more defining characteristics of these locality balls. From the information I managed to translate from the German breeders page, any hatchling who comes from one of these animals that is over 100 grams out of the egg is considered a giant. Unfortunately for me, my own did not go for me last year, so I have as yet to see if this information is accurate. I do know the imported female I have is roughly 5' 6" long and weighs 3600 grams. I also have a 6' long female who weighs in at 3800 grams, and side by side you can clearly tell the difference in the one I purchased as a Ghana/sub Saharan giant. Her head and neck are much larger and thicker, and her body structure is also different. Only time will tell if she ever reaches the mythical 8000 gram mark.

Could you take a picture of someone holding her?
