    My snakes don't smell!
So, I have a bit of a roommate issue with my snakes. She complains that there is a smell in our room now that we have more snakes than before. I agreed with her before and have been working on getting rid of it. I removed all substrate (that's what it smelled like) and have replaced everything with brand new tubs and paper towels. I've sprayed the room, left the windows open and done everything I can to disinfect, etc. I have the nose of a bloodhound and can literally smell the smallest traces of anything and there is no longer any scent in our room. However, my roommate disagrees and is not happy. I think she walks in now expecting it, so she always thinks she smells it. But, it case my dog-like nose is betraying me, what else can I do??

It also probably wasnt helped by the rat one of my snakes left behind a few days ago, but that is obviously gone.

Please help, cause she might kill me lol.

The easiest fix and getting a new roommate that likes snakes.

It probably won't matter what you do. They are probably going to complain regardless.

Maybe one of the plug in things that says it kills odors.

Left over rats are the worst odor ever. A left over rat in a tub can turn bad extremely quickly lol. Such a bummer my gf did the same thing. Good luck with that sounds like a pain in the bleeeeep. If she's not your gf. Who cares on to the next one.

Haha, unfortunately I can't get rid of her for another 72 days when we graduate (yes...im counting down the days) and I can gtfo of here! She agreed and was even excited about me getting more, so I feel like she needs to deal. I definitely like the idea of one of the plug-in things, though. Thanks!

Carpet fresh on the floors every morning will really help the staleness, If she still complains start breeding Rats & Mice that will totally send your roommate over the EDGE! lol

Don't even need to start breeding them! Just get a pair of same-sex mice and let the smell do the rest. ;)

Try one of those odor absorbing jells or baking soda packs (like the ones you put in a fridge). They work great.

Try picking up Arm and Hammer carpet powder - I use it at my apartment because I have close to 60 animals living in there, and I like it to smell nice. No issues with the animals and you can't tell that I have them. I vacuum about once a week, so I put the powder down, leave it for 15 minutes, then just go around the apartment. Multiple people have remarked that you can't tell how many animals I have in my apartment (well, until you see the cages), so there's that.

Plug ins and/or candles can also be very very helpful.

I have one of those electric oil burner/tart warmers...you can get them at Yankee Candle, Scentsy, Gold Canyon, prob even at Walmart. We have 3 racks of snakes, plus a cage of ASFs and now a cage of micro mice all in one room. I love it, and it even has a timer on it so it auto shuts off in case I forget :P. Plus, you can get a wide variety of scents for it.

I bet it was the rat too. They smell bad. Snakes don't stink at all specially if you spot clean after they mess. Time to look for a new roomie.

Well, thank you all for your suggestions! I've literally been dousing the place in febreeze to the point where I'm literally choking and my throat stings and she hasn't complained yet, so I suppose it's working. If she complains again I'll try the scented plug in things. Unfortunately, I'm pretty limited in what I can do here at the moment, so some of the fancier suggestions are not an option...but I would gladly keep rats just to piss her off

I would not ever use anything scented near my snakes!!!!!!!! Stop the febreeze!!!!!!! Stop the scentsy :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:e!!!!!!! No plug in smellers!!!!! Not even humans should be using that stuff, it is so toxic. Have you ever heard of snakes getting neurological damage and dying from regular everyday household chemicals? (Hairspray!) don't use that stuff. If YOU'RE choking imagine how your snakes must feel, and they only have one good lung!

I have 60+ snakes and every single person that has come to my place has said "Wow I can't believe it it doesn't even smell bad in the snake room!" She's just being a prissy from the sounds of it. Why does it matter anyways if its your bedroom? Just tell her not to come in! If you share a bedroom, whatever tell her she gets a new roommate in 72 days, or house your snakes somewhere else. Just don't kill them with toxic artificial scents.
