    Laying an egg. In pictures!
My blackback began laying 10 days early. I got some pics of the laying of one of the eggs.

8 eggs total. Great veins in all of them. One is a slight boob egg but aside from the newsprint they all look healthy.

Pairing was to a blackback cinnamon in the fall but earlier in the summer she was also put to a champagne and a queen bee so there's a chance she may have retained something from those pairings as well. We shall know around April 20th or so :)

    Here is deflated momma..

It's funny because the only reason I caught her laying was because I opened her tub to change it to white paper towels (to avoid the newsprint thing) and there she was laying! Oh well. Lol!!

Great pics and thanks for sharing.

So many threads talk about not rotating the eggs once laid from thier original downside position. The newsprint on the eggs would seem to indicate that those sides were originally face down when they were laid but are now face up. Is that correct and if so, what prompted you to rotate their position for the egg crate?

There is no air bubble in the egg the moment it's laid, and it doesn't matter where the initial vein cluster starts out. If you google pics of candling eggs, like python eggs, you'll see that the vein cluster which is there right after the eggs are laid is anywhere it wants to be. It usually starts out on top, but due to the weight difference of that part of the egg, they roll as the momma is gathering them in to a pile to incubate as she lays each one. They end up facing all different ways. Many end up vein cluster down, which makes the most sense because the baby begins to form from that first cluster within the yolk. If they are turned immediately after laying and before they completely dry, harden, and stick together like glue, it doesn't matter which way they are facing.

The problem comes in if they get turned after they have been sitting for awhile. Everything settles to where it needs to be for incubation and eventually a tiny air bubble will begin to form at the "top" of the egg. Python eggs are very porous. Most people mark the eggs when they put them in the incubator so that know which side is "up" in case it ever tips or gets turned.

I caught her laying and saw those few with the news print being pushed around to make room for more. I gathered them up shortly afterward and before they hardened. That's why some ended up looking like that. I don't purposely flip them over but if mom does I just go with it.
