Possible scale rot?
I've had my ball python Louis for about 3 months now, he has gone thro two sheds and has always eaten his food. Today i noticed he had some scales peeling off, like a thin clear piece of skin peeling off individual scales,(blue circle) and upon further inspection, noticed a bit of yellowish discoloring in some of his stomach scales, (red circle)could this be scale rot? His cage was very clean, and i believe his humidity was good. Sometimes his temperature will jump close to 90 degree f in the basking area, but very rarely. He seemed in a very good mood lately, and shows no sign of red skin or swelling, and he last ate 3 days ago.http://i.imgur.com/Wq1nBfc.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/E5z6kf9.jpg

Welcome to the site.
1. What are your cage temperatures?
2. What are you using to heat the cage?
3. What are you using to measure temperatures?
4. What substrate are you using?

Re: Possible scale rot?
Thank you!
Cages temperatures is about 80 degrees f
I am using an inferred light in a lamp at the top of the cage for heating
I use a thermometer in cage to measure the temperatures and
I use careFRESH ultra bedding (cellulose fiber) for a substrate.

The entire cage is 80 F? Do you have a hot side/cool side of the cage?
-
Re: Possible scale rot?
cool side is average 80 and hot side averages around 85
-
I would bump the hot side up a few degrees. The ideal ranges are 78-82 cool side, 88-92 hot side.

Re: Possible scale rot?
i was mistaken, the cool side is average 80 and the hot side is average 90
honestly this is my first time owning a snake, but i do realize i need a more accurate thermometer.
Supplies for snakes are often hard to come by where i live.

Re: Possible scale rot?
any idea what could be causing the discolored scales?
-
From the pictures I don't think its scale rot, but I would keep a close eye on it just in case.

Re: Possible scale rot?
Oh thank gosh i was so worried, i love this snake more then my life!
I read online that a good way to deal with a mild case of scale rot was using betadine diluted in a bath tub, letting you snake soak for about 20 mins
Do you recommend i do this even if im not sure if this is indeed scale rot?

Possible scale rot?
If it gets worse, it won't hurt to do the betadine baths but I would wait. It might clear up in the next shed. You may want to put him on paper towels or newspaper to make sure everything is very clean. The fact that he's eating is good. They usually don't eat when they have infections or are sick.

I would go ahead and get a bottle of betadine. Maybe even give your BP 1 or 2 good soaks. Keep in mind that BP's don't really like baths so just use good judgment on if it is worth it or not. Just make sure that you check him at least once a day for the next week or so, and give us an update if things start to look bad.

Re: Possible scale rot?
In fact i fed him about a half hour ago and he ate quickly!
i have been feeding him a bit more commonly because i have some very small mice i dont want to waste
i plan to finish feeding him the smaller mice then move on to bigger ones ;)
