    Tragedy
I just got home from a friends house. Somebody broke into my house sometime today. I found the place trashed. The worst part is whoever broke in must have unplugged the heat tape while they were looking for something. Two of my snakes are dead and 1 is barely hanging on. What can i do to help him? I am just holding him and trying to heat him up with my body heat. I dont know what to do.

The other two were just babies. I dont know what time this happened but all 3 snakes were super cold. I thought they were all dead but my biggest male started to very slowly move and i instanlty picked him up and been trying to warm him up.

That's terrible. I'm so sorry. :( Maybe try to heat the others for a few hours before you totally give up in them. That sucks. :(:(

This is one of the most terrible things I have heard. I hope you have some sort of insurance or something. Like home owners or renters. Not even sure if that would cover something like that. Sucks!

I don't want to give any false hope but try to warm up all of the snakes.

Crossing my fingers and hoping the little guys are just in a sort of stasis and only seem to be gone.

Oh my gosh, that's terrible. Did your house get really cold? Or do you think they did something to the snakes? They can live at room temp for a few days without health issues (usually). If you can plug the heat tape back in do that and put the snake back in the tub. If you don't have power, but have a gas water heater fill up bottles with hot water.

I keep them in my room and it is kinda cold so i have a heater that keeps the temperatures up but the heater and heat tape were plugged into the same outlet and they either unplugged it on purpose or tripped on the cord while looking through my room. It doesnt look like they did anything to the snakes. They were just super cold.

This is so sad. I would cry for days if anything happened to my snakes. Long story short, one of my snakes fell about 11 feet inside his tub and even though he was fine, I still cried for a while because it scared me so much. I really hope they pull through for you. Focus on getting them warm and catching the guy that did this to them!

I had an escapee go "hard" on me once.
She was around 400 grams, I got a plastic shoe box for my hatchlings, a bunch of tissue, and 4 heat packs, kept the snake in the box with the rest of those things under my blanket over night to find her a little slow the next morning, but she went back to normal a few days later.
She's been healthy and feeding well for me ever since!
I hope they all make it!

I am so sorry, I cannot even imagine what you are going through. I hope they find the scumbag! Warm them up best you can and hope for the best. I would imagine you will be dealing with residual issues (RI, Neuro) if they recover, but at least you have your babies back! Let us know how they turn out, my heart aches for your loss!

Sorry to hear about the break in and hopefully they can catch the guy. Like everyone else has said, just warm them up. It might be a little late for this but massaging can also help the bloodflow to the tissue. It works well with mammals but the circulatory systems are similar. Also check to make sure they aren't overheating. Warming them up slowly is best. I would also double check your thermostat to make sure the settings didn't get messed up.

Sorry to hear it! I would report them as part of the damages. It could boost the charges to a felony. Depending on the state laws.

That's IF they catch them. It is Chicago we are talking about. One of the highest crime cities in the country.

Breaking and entering is already a felony.

Of course. But the odds of the perpetrator being caught are pretty slim, unfortunately. Horrible times we live in. Simply disgusting.

Unfortunately insurance only covers inanimate objects, animals are usually specifically excluded from coverage.

Good to know. I own a home and have all the insurance and such. I am actually ignorant to exactly what it covers. I should read up on that. :banghead:

Similar things apply in car insurance... only items common to the use of the vehicle AS a vehicle (Sub woofer permanently installed, cd player/stereo, speakers, GPS NOT on your Cell phone) are covered if somebody breaks in OR you are liable/responsible for the accident (did damage to yourself/your own items). If somebody breaks into your car or you wreck your car and your pets are injured, your car insurance will not pay for their damages/injuries. Pets, unless pet specific insurance exists and is purchaced for them under their own policy, a car insurance policy, will typically regard your pets no different as they would your purse/credit card/laptop you thought was well enough hidden under your seat: as items not covered under your car policy. They might be items covered under home-owners, but as already mentioned, pets are a different thing entirely.

Just some things to keep in mind regarding insurance and your pets (and personal belongings). Read your home/car insurance policy and understand it.

Sorry for taking so long to get back on here. All 3 of the snakes were alive when i left for work this morning. My 2 younger snakes really looked dead but starting moving about half hour after heating them up. And as for the police catching somebody i really doubt it. Since nobody was hurt and nobody wad home when it happened it isnt a priority fir them. I live on the south side of Chicago. Anybody who knows about murder rates knows what i mean im just glad the snakes are alive. Im going to keep an eye on them to make sure they dont develop any issues.

There is insurance for pets, but I don't know if it covers this kind of thing (pets getting stolen and/or injured in accidents/theft). There's insurance for horses that WOULD cover that, but I don't think so for other pets. Would have to look that up...

And unfortunately pet insurance is EXPENSIVE too. None of my pets are insured any longer because it became prohibitively expensive and I preferred to put that money into a savings account for when I need it, instead of spending it on a "maybe". If I remember correctly (it's been awhile so I might be remembering incorrectly), it was something like $200-300 every month per cat or dog. Varies depending on where you live, age of pet, breed, etc. I don't even know what horse insurance costs because I've never even considered it.

So glad to hear they are alive! I hope they come back to full health for you too!

I know what you mean about this not being a priority to the police. I don't think the crime rates in my city are any where near Chicago (as bad as it feels sometimes...), and even so when my house was broken into a couple years ago the police actually told me, "Not much we can do about it." Nothing was stolen, no one hurt, no suspects. Just the way it goes sometimes, unfortunately. :(

Are you renting? Is there anything you can do to make your place safer to help prevent this from happening again? I'm just afraid maybe the people who did this will come back, since they already been through your place and know what you have now. :(

Hope they are better guard dogs than my dad's dog!
Recently my dad's house was broken into. His dog lives in the house. The burglars came through the kitchen window, and put the dog in the garage so they could do their thing uninterrupted (thankfully didn't hurt the dog!). Stole a laptop, part of a coin collection, and some handheld games.

isnt there this old saying among people like pathologists and doctors: Its not dead until it is warm and dead?

thats the take-away message from this sad story with a good ending... its not dead until it is warm and dead. and it first referred to humans, but i guess for reptiles and amphibians its especially true.

As friendly as my dogs are with my family and even people we meet on walks they are absolutely insanely vicious with any stranger that comes in the house without me or my brother present. I found this out when some sales person decided it was ok to walk in through the front door to see if i was interested in buying cleaning products
