I need to buy a therm./hygrometer combo and was wondering if I should spend the $35 @ bigappleherp.com or go to Wal-Mart as I've read somewhere here they are available there for $15. If I go to Wal-Mart (which would be more convenient and cheaper), what dept. would I find it? OR can anyone suggest another online supplier?

Thermometer/Hygrometer Combo
I would definately go to Walmart. I prefer the reading to come right off of the unit so I bought two & including tax they came to less than 35 dollars. If you go to walmart, just ask somebody for the thermometers. You will see the one you want. They call it an indoor/outdoor thermometer or sumthin like that. It is made by acu-rite & it is a quality item!
-
Definitely the walmart option. I got one from there made by GE
-
and it measures humidity as well?
-
Yep - they're by the air conditioners, humidifiers, mailboxes and such - likely near hardware.
-
Excellent! Thanks guys.....taking a late lunch and going on a Walmart run (I just love payday!!)
-
Yeah, head to WalMart, mine had it in the Garden section, Kmart and Target have them too. They measure temp and humidity on the unit, plus temp at a probe you can place wherever. I'd recommend puttin the unit on the cool side and probe under the substrate at your hottest point, probably under the hide on the warm side.
-
I was able to find it where Smulkin said it would be. I'm back at work now, but I'll be headin' home to set it up shortly......thanks!!
-
We love ours, we have one in everybodies cage. My hubby had one of those little crazy analog humidity gages and it was completely off. We put it in the cage and the humdity was real low. Now we are set between 50-60% with the analog saying we are at 80%. Kinda crazy, but thanks to everyone here that suggested them.
-
Yeah, it's great. I'm always checking it now though (moving the probe here, placing it there....etc, etc). Mark thinks I'm a little obsessed, but I can't help it! I'll be going back to Walmart tomorrow to get another one since we just purchased another BP.....I'm an addict, what can I say?? :P
-
Excellent! If only WalMart knew what a huge herp supplier they were. ;)
-
No doubt! I'll be doing the 'rubbermaid' thing with our new guy (which by the way is Mark's B-day present since Sophie was mine), so I'll also be buying that AND a human heating pad, etc., etc....
-
Very cool. You'll want to pick up something to secure the enclosure as well, depending on what kind you get. For the lock-top bin types, clamps or toggle bolts or something similar can be used or for drawers the best I've found is small bungee cords. And if you don't have anything for elevating the container a bit off the heating pad, you might want to buy a set of stick-on feet for furniture or electronics or something similar. It's so hard to stick to just one herp. :)
-
Yes, the furniture 'feet' are on my list too, need a couple for Soph's enclosure as well.......

Yes, very hard, just didn't think we'd be adding to the herp family so soon though. I was going to wait until the show in Daytona this August, but I just couldn't resist! :D

Dang things are addictive. :) I am hoping to make it to the Daytona show too, so who knows what I'll come home with if I make it.
-
I wish they had those reptile shows around Chicago... It seems the only things that ever come to this stupid town are car shows , boat shows, and food fests. *sigh* :[
-
There is one in the Chicago area, and Ohio isn't too far away with a monthly show.

This is a pic of the thermometer that we have. My hubby has the probe on the warm side and the unit sits on the cool side. They have these at Walmart for about $15. For anybody that is interested.

If you make it, let me know, maybe we can meet up. Judy is going to try and come w/her daughter as well.

That's exactly the one I bought. I don't keep the unit in the enclosure as I feel it takes up too much room right now. So, I keep the probe on the warm side and place the unit in on the cool side when I want a temp reading or when I want to gauge the humidity.

I have it stuck to the side of my tank in my leopard gecko's enclosure doesn't take up too much room. I like it for the accuracy of the humidity. I think they are the coolest. It took me forever to find a link for it. The reason I posted it because if anyone wasn't sure what we were talking about.
I am at work and I am very bored :D

I hear that! Luckily, I don't work weekends, but when I am at work I check in from time to time cuz I get very bored myself (regardless of all the work I always have to do)!

I know. Judy and I were talking about possibly renting a condo in New smyrna Beach together for the weekend. :) I'd love to meet up and will absolutely be discussing plans here if it turns out I am able to go.
-
That would be very kewl!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works out. :D

Are you close enough that you can just drive in for the show? Also, any plans to hit the Atlanta Expo in November? Unless disaster strikes, I am there with bells on. :)

Daytona is about 2.5/3hrs. from Tampa (always depends on traffic).
I didn't know about the show in Atlanta, but I'd love to try and make it. Even if I have to drive, it's only about 10hrs., but I think plane tix are relatively inexpensive..... Is there a calendar where these events are listed?
-
This is the best one I know of, though I've seen a couple of others:
http://www.kingsnake.com/events.html
So I guess you'll be driving in for Daytona rather than staying at a hotel or something? That was what I really meant. It would be great if you made it to the Atlanta show, especially as this may be the last one because of new regulations making it not worth it to hold them in Georgia anymore (all the vendors have to spend $200 on a state pet dealer's license). AirTran flies here from Tampa for $99. :)
-
I'd like to make a weekend out of the Daytona show, so we'll probably stay at least one night. As far as Atlanta, that seems very reasonable, would much rather fly than drive, besides w/gas prices the way they are, it's almost cheaper to fly :!:
-
Then if we all make it to Daytona, maybe we can do dinner after the reptile show or something along those lines. I hear you on the gas prices, and it's diffucult to predict what the prices will be several months from now. I expect they'll go down a good bit before the election, but will come up again some for Thanksgiving. Still, that's a bargain flight and if you stay in the hotel across the street, you wouldn't even necessarily have to rent a car. Judy's considering coming to the Atlanta show as well, and maybe we could talk some more folks into it. I think Sass said she'd like to try to make it, too.
-
A few questions from a noob about housing & lighting
Sounds like a party!! Keep me posted......let's hope both shows work out. If you make Daytona, we'll definitely go out for dinner and drinks.....
-
Excellent! A week from now I hope to know where I'll be living at the time of both shows and have an idea of what my budget may be so that I have a chance of figuring out if I can go. It doesn't help that Daytona is the first weekend after school starts and my younger daughter's birthday, either.
-
Sounds like it'll be a busy week not matter what ends up happening. It's a few months away, so anything can happen, but it would be really kewl if it worked out......
-
Agreed, I am hoping it will work out, and also that you, Judy, and Sass will be able to make it to the Atlanta show! All plans are on hold until I know where I'll be living, though, so cross your fingers I'll get the house I put in an offer on today. :)
-
My fingers are crossed! Will this be your first house? In any case, it's stressful and exciting....bittersweet as they say...keep us posted on how it goes :D
-
Thanks! Yes, it will be my first house, and the theme for this year has definitely been stress in my household, but at least this potentially has a good outcome! This house is so much better than the others I've been looking at that they just don't even compare. I will definitely let you know if my offer is accepted or rejected.
