Sooo, my 'she' is a 'he'.... lol
I picked up a Normal Ball Python off of CL quite a while ago, before I had much knowledge about sexing, etc. The owner was 'absolutely certain' that she was a female. Completely certain!! lol Well after having her for a while and believing Sheba was a she, I started having this sneaky suspicion, and although I'm still not really great at successfully popping (most of my snakes are females as per my popping methods... lol) I thought I'd give Sheba a try this afternoon.... and out popped unmistakable huuuuge Sperm Plugs. Ha! Well, good thing I didn't buy 'her' strictly for breeding purposes... We really liked her pattern, brighter color, and personality, too, and knew that there was always the possibility that the owner was wrong on sex.

So I guess Sheba is a he and needs a new name... Anyone have any suggestions? :)

That is not a reliable way to determine the sex...Females get build up of shed, etc and when popped it can be mistaken for Sperm.

I would try again, or have someone who knows how to sex check for you...

I did try again, and got what *I think* was a partial hemipene on the left side... but will have someone either show me or sex her/him for me.

The owner we got him/her from said they'd had the snake for between two and three years, and when I got it home, it only weighed 650g, but didn't look unhealthy, just lean and muscular, no triangle to its' back... that's what made me start to suspect that she was a he.... But will double check :) Thanks!

Haha, maybe his name needs to be Sue! :P
I was thinking we could name this guy Slim Shady (if he indeed turns out to be a dude), since he did slip in here as a slim girl, and all shady-like :P

I would say the most common mistake when sexing is mistaking a male for a female because someone tried to pop unsuccessfully and upon not seeing hemipenes you think you got a girl.

Agreed. I got a female that someone else passed up because of supposed sperm plugs. She laid 12 eggs.

Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like coca-cola.

C-O-L-A Cola.... I think Lola would be a great name for a snake. Male OR female.

And yes, I've also popped out mucus plugs from females that looked like sperm plugs. EVERY body who has done this for any length of time has mis-sexed a snake one time or another. If you think it'll never happen to you, trust me, it will sooner or later.

This is good to know! I will definitely get him/her properly sexed. :) Maybe my girl just popped some pseudo sperm plugs :D I am, after all, not a pro at popping....

If I had a dollar for every "girl" I brought home who was was boy, I'd be rich.

Some were my own fault for not checking myself and others were from 'reputable' breeders who fell asleep at the wheel.

I just traded my own Lola and Ivy for a "female" sub-adult Albino Kahl Boa on the condition/promise the guy was keeping them both for himself and not only did he trade them away almost immediately to who-knows-where, the Boa is a boy.

I'm still grieving that I don't know where my girls went.

Trying to decide if filing a BOI on him will do any good.

That's terrible. :( I'm sorry that happened to you. There are too many dishonest people in the world and in the snake business, and I don't see why people have to be shady like that. If I say I'm going to do something, I'm going to follow through with it. I don't know why that's so hard for some people. Have you posted pics of your girls? That maybe they'd pop up somewhere? I would be sad just not knowing that they were in a good home and being taken care of. :(

Now that I've learned how to probe, I'll be sure to check myself if I'm in doubt! I know that's not an option when shipping, though.

They are both really beautiful. I hope you find them. I would suggest putting this in its own thread with a warning about the person you traded with, so it doesn't happen to anyone else. And maybe someone will have some info for you. Good luck, for sure.
