    Help.....snake was bitten by mouse
Watson was bitten last night by his supper. He will only take live for me.The mouse was pretty nervous after I put it in the tank and Watson grabbed right away. He was bitten next to is eye. I grabbed the mouse's nose right away with tongs and pretty much crushed its face. Watson stayed wrapped up on it.There was alot of blood.
I took him out to look at the damage this morning.I can see a small slit right next to his eye.The eye seems kinda bluish also.No swelling though. I didn't mess with him very much cause I don't want him to regurgitate. Will he lose sight in his eye? Anything I can/should do? I feel SO BAD !! It all happened so fast. I really tried to help him.....

Can you post any pictures of the cut? If you are concerned and think its that bad get it to a vet.

Try and get pics if you can with out them well either over or under estimate the problem :) but I've had my normal male bit pretty good when he was younger he healed fine it was a under the jaw area bite. He now strikes everything in the face, he's gotten good at it too

a bite here and there is just a part of feeding live. Keep an eye on it for swelling. If you want, you can take a q-tip and dip it in some betadine to rub on the cut. That will kill any infection that might be there.

You can also use imageshack or photobucket and upload pictures there from your computer. They are free. Then you find the "direct link" option and copy and paste into your message on here or into an [IMG][/IMG] tag.

Betadine ONLY for something that close to an eye. Other disinfectants can cause serious damage to the cornea.

I'm a vet tech and I work almost exclusively with ophthalmology (eyes). If you are able to post pics, I might be able to answer some of your questions. I don't like really that you said the eye looks 'bluish..." he may need meds for inflammation, an ulcer, etc, but then again he may be fine.

A herp vet or a veterinary ophthalmologist that would see a snake is your best bet if you want to be absolutely sure, but if that's not possible, post up some pics.

    Good luck!

Okay, so here is my attempt at posting pictures. Also, if the pictures work, there is a spot on the top of his head that he has had since we got him as a 54g baby. The person at the pet shop told us it was just a scab from some injury. Well, the scab fell off about 8 weeks ago and it has looked like this ever since. I put ointment on it once then read here that ointment was a no-no so I wiped it off. Since then, I have just kept an eye on it. It never gets red or swollen but it doesn't seem to be getting any smaller.
The mouse bite is right above his left eye. You can just barely see it if you look right at the top of his eye. The eye it's self does not look quite as bluish today. Still no swelling. How will I be able to tell if he loses sight in the eye? Anything else I can do? (besides convince him to eat f/t...)
    Thanks!!

I hate to sound picky, but do you have any pictures where your BP's head is in focus, instead of your hand? :)

going though the pics. there one or 2 that sharper than other, by my look at the pic. I suggest getting some neospirion(spelling) with out pain relief in it and apply to the hole ( sore) and keep it coated for a while ( until will healing) that looks nasty place to get a chew mark. are you sure the snake not rubbed it head against something with a edge to it. and just cut it out like that.

I had the same mar on a hatchling years ago and it was from the tub ( it kept trying to push the lid up). I also suggest keeping it on paper towels until it healed and your not applying neo to it. ( to keep bits of bedding from lodging under the scab and such.)

I cannot tell too much by the pics, but from what I see is it doesn't look bad. I'd just watch it honestly. Applying disinfectant on it and accidentally getting it on the eye would be counter productive. That's just me. I deal with worrying too much too. They are resilient, if that injury would kill them there would be no ball pythons in the wild. Although, a cleArer picture may show us how bad it is cause the pics posted dont tell me much honestly

Oh and btw, snakes don't see well anyways, and there are multiple accounts of eyeless ball pythons thriving in captivity. I wouldn't worry too much about that either

Yeah, I have a crappy camera. They were the best out of about 20 that I took !! Sorry : (
I am pretty much leaving the eye alone right now and just checking it everyday. The hole on his head has been pretty much unchanged since the scab came off. It looks like his skull is showing though. I thought I read that ointments have petroleum products in them and they are not good for their scales. So is it okay to put Neosporin on it? I would like to do SOMETHING to get it healed.
NO. I have never seen him rub on anything except a branch when he was shedding. Doesn't mean he could not have done it before we got him as a hatchling. Oh, by the way, I will be trying p/k next feeding day. I hope he will be okay with that. And I have learned a lesson and will never buy from a pet store again !! They have been NO help to me at all concerning his head sore. Is there a directory of herp vets? I am in the middle of nowhere....
