    Mini Freezer for rat storage?
Hey guys, I recently purchased a bulk amount of frozen rats and was keeping them in our cadaver freezer at my work (an animal hosp) but they need to be moved now. Any suggestions for a SMALL, cheap freezer? I see a ton of mini fridge's but I don't think they will be cold enough? There are some decent deals on ebay, but that's about it so far...everything else is pretty expensive. I'd love something like under $80....cheaper the better.

Any other suggestions are welcome too! Keeping them in my food fridge/freezer is not an option due to the other people in the house being repulsed by it lol

    Thanks!

I've just got a nice cheap 5.0 cubic foot chest freezer from home depot. Currently have a little less then a thousand small/med rats in it along with several hundred mice. It's packed pretty tight but that's all I usually need (I have a second one of the same size in the garage but I've rarely had to use it and it's not even plugged in right now)

    use this product: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Igloo-3.2-...eezer/15162473

The top is for my frozen mice for my corn snakes (I feed the BP live since I can't fit mice and rats in that freezer...it holds a lot...just not all of that) and the bottom for my cokes. It will be hard to find something under $80 unless you look on craigslist for a chest freezer. Sometimes you can find them for $50-$100 if you need something a little bigger.

I got this at the flea market for $125 new, works great, LOTS of freezer space and I thaw frozen in the bottom part.

Gets SUPER cold, also has adjustable temprature

I bought this one recently and like it a lot.

It was $219 in store, but they price matched to walmart at $169.
    I see it's on sale now :)

I have a similar problem, not cost wise but size wise. I only have three snakes but keeping rats with my veggies is not appealing. I could use a freezer that is 2 Cu Ft just so it does not take up a lot of room and I can keep the rats separate. Looks like I'm just not gonna find what I would like. :(

I have three BPs and I use the freezer for the mice and rats and fridge for Mountain Dew and beer:banana:. I can't store a lot of BP food but I'd say probably a month or two worth.

Where I am we have a couple used appliance stores. They pick up non-working appliances, refurbish them and sell them pretty cheap. Freezers are kind of a hit or miss item though.

I found a mini chest freezer on Craigslist for $60. I think it's probably about 3-4 cubic feet, and it does great! It did take a couple weeks of looking before one popped up, they aren't as common as the freezer/fridge combo.

I had the exact same problem. Fridges in this building can't be over a certain size(5.0, I think...).
I'm using a Magic Chef(like the one southwind mentioned), but mine's a 3.5 cubic foot model. The freezer is in the top and has a separate temp control than the rest of the fridge, the freezer can hold quite a few boxes of large mice.

It works like a charm, unfortunately I can't recall the price, although it's probably a Wal-Mart buy.

Why not? Its just raw meat, like a steak or porkchop. If you're worried about contamination, just put the feeders inside an airtight tupperware. If it's a sight thing, line the container with paper or find an opaque one.

    Mini Freezer for rat storage?
I found mine on Craigslist. Paid $50 for it. I think it's somewhere in the 5 cu ft range.

Couple of reasons,1) while it doesn't bother me or my daughter too much, my wife and my babysitter don't like it a bit, 2) I got the last couple of purchases from Rodent pro so the rats are urine and feces stained therefore "not as appealing" as my nice clean steak, fish, shrimp, and other meats stored with my veggies, 3) I love snakes but not rodents so much. Its just not preferable :)

I looked at Craigslist before I finally broke down and spent the 250 on a brand new 5.something cubic foot stand up deep freeze. I have my rats and mice on the little ledge on the right side and they go from top to bottom. I have about 300 rats, 240 small and 60+ pups in there. We have it blocked off for regular food but I know I could get 1000+ rodents in there if I wanted to. Plus, I go a 2 year replacement warranty on it if it ever breaks.

    Well, there's your problem.

I would never order from Rodent Pro just because of the fact that they often have dirty feeders (and I've heard rumors of them carrying parasites). If you're going to keep feeders with human food and are worried about things like feces on the rats, order from somewhere like Layne Labs. Not sure about Rodent Pro, but Layne Labs is USDA certified and supplies zoos and things.

Still, a sealed ziploc inside an airtight tupperware should solve your problem. Your meat is hopefully sealed as well and not just loose in the freezer.

Though, I'm curious. Where are you keeping your feeders now, if not in the freezer with your food? You mentioned you don't have a smaller freezer, right?

Thanks, I just ordered my next feeders from Layne Labs but I needed an order and they were short for a while so I had to pick some up from the monthly reptile show.

I've been using this one for a couple years, really like it and it was well worth the expense. No more rats touching my death by chocolate.
