    Need help finding new Thermostat
I'm looking to buy a new thermostat for a bp rack I'm building. Right now I have my ball pythons on hydrofarm thermostats, but I don't really like the on/off heating function. I want to stay in the $100-120 range. The ones I have in mined are the Herpstat Intro, Herpstat 1 Basic, Ve-200, Ranco thermostat. Which one is best for flex watt heat tape on a rack?

Ranco are on off. The VE series have very few features compared with most of the competition in fact they are dwarfed by all but helix in features. That leaves the intro and the one. I would suggest the intro plus over the intro the mechanical relay and under temp shut down are worth the extra few dollars. The one has the added humidity control and pulse. The intro may cause buzzing due to the dimming nature of the controller so that leaves the Herpstat one. The ecozone and herpkeepers are a fair bit more they offer far advanced warning systems but fewer safety systems, they however are priced quite a lot more than the herpstat.

I have the Herpstat 1 Basic and I love it. The Herpstats seemed to be the best for the money when I researched th last year. Everyone that had one seems to really like them. If you can swing it I would recommend the 1(non basic) because it has one more layer of safety but the basic is great too.

My next one is Herpstat 1 or 2 depending on if I go with a couple PVC cages or a rack.

Looks like I'm late to the party, but my vote is Herpstat as well.

I have both VEs and Herpstats and have zero complaints on either. Quality and customer service are both excellent.

    I have a VE and a Herpstat 2

I got the VE first and realized there is a critical safety feature on Herpstat that makes me not want to use another brand until it comes standard.

With the VE and most other brands, if the thermostat fails it can land in the ON position. This means the heat tape goes to full power and your snakes potentially get cooked / house burns down.

With the Herpstat, when it fails it will always be in the OFF position. This means the hot spot goes off and your snakes sit at ambient temps for a couple hours. Since ambient temps in a room with a rack are in a safe zone for survival, your snakes will be alive when you find them and your house will be standing.

Please correct me if anyone has other input. This is just what I've gained by reading enough of these thermostat threads.

I believe the feature is available only on the 1 and above. The 1Basic and below will fail off but there is a possibility of the triac failing and these won't disconnect the power. I use the one basic in my custom cage using a CHE as a heat source (just slightly more wattage than I need) and even if it ran full blast for a while it won't cook my snake. If I was using belly heat I would get the Herpstat 1 no the basic. I think it is $20 more.

It is the intro and one basic that do not have the relay. The into+ and one and higher have. I suspect we will see the one basic change in a while perhaps even the intro too.

If its not too late, I would think about spending ~$20 extra for the upgraded safety features of the herpstat 1 over the intro or 1 basic. I sleep better at night knowing that I have pretty much the best safety mechanisms I can find.
