Pine bedding okay?

I feel like I've always heard that pine shouldn't be used due to toxic fumes, however I saw some at a local feed store recently and it is 1/3 the price of the Aspen that I buy and the bag is at least twice as big. Can it be used? If not for snakes could I use it for my rat colony? Thanks!

Kiln dried pine is 100% fine. Some people even say that regular pine is fine, but I wouldn't trust it personally.

Only if its Kiln dried.
Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable using it with snakes, but it has been done by others. My rats are on kiln dried pine just fine.

I remember someone on Bob's forum(back when it was up) had been using pine for years on his snakes with no ill effects, as long as it is not treated with any chemicals, anitfungals and such I would assume it would work.

Pine bedding is fine.

I don't know enough to offer a definitve answer as far as the snakes go, but I've used it for years with rats and they've never suffered any apparent ill effects.

I don't use it myself because I don't like shavings bedding, but was surprised to see when I visited that a couple very well known breeders use kiln dried pine for their collections of some very expensive animals. They've been using it for a very long time with no ill effects, so if I were into shavings bedding I'd be giving it some serious thought.

So to clarify, it would be fine for both the rats and snakes so long as it is kiln dried? Based on your response, Skip, I take it that it doesn't even need to be kiln dried. Is that so?

I've never seen non-dried pine bedding. Most wood fiber bedding is dried to reduce the growth of bacteria during storage and to increase absorption.

I buy the Mallard Creek Micro Flake. It's cheap, absorbent and cheap.

i just bought a bag of aspen that is about 20lbs or so from the cle reptile show for 20, look like it is enough to fill my cages several times over! I don't know if you have any reptile shows around but that could be another option for you too.
