Plissken is finally officialy switched over to rats, last night he ate his first unscented rat like a champ. A method I used to enhance his response was to heat the rats head in particular with a hair dryer. After dangling his rat for a bit I decided to warm it up since it had cooled a little from me playing rat puppet. I held a hair dryer over the rats head for a minute or two and this realy helped I feel, in getting a nice strike within seconds. The short tail was out looking for food even before it was his turn ( greedy!)

Rusty!
I'm going to try a f/t tonight. I've got some out of town trips coming up this summer, and I am going to be having people who don't normally care for snakes look after Amber (with strict instructions from me of course). I think that being able to feed f/t is best because I wouldn't ask someone to go buy a live mouse, prekill, then offer to the snake in a seperate enclosure. With frozen thawed, all that would be needed is to thaw, warm, and make the mouse dance in front of a hide.
Any last words of advice before I try switching Amber tonight?

If Amber is already eating pre-killed and you get the temp right, you'll probably have an uneventful switch. I would suggest using a thick (like freezer-style) plastic bag to do the thawing in to keep the rodent dry and help retain the "yummy" scent, and remember that normal body temp for mice and rats is ~98.6, so you should (in most cases) be aiming for 98.6-100F for the warmed temp. Good luck!

don't heat em' up too much though... it's sick.

thanks wizill and marla, I'll give an update later tonight on how it goes!

.
I feed FK does anyone else? I know for sure that lots of people on this forum have switched to either FK or FT and have totaly abandoned live feedings which is great.
-
Anyone have any experience feeding a variety? f/t one week, p/k the next week? I would think that would be better in case a supply of either live or frozen suddenly became unavailable.
-
You can always turn live or p/k into frozen. :) Let us know how the feeding goes.

Ball Python Cage Designs
lol.... technically a p/k rat IS a f/t rat. just not frozen! wow!
;)
-
Well yeah p/k as in I'm the one who does it, not the mouse breeder's fridge.
AND.....Amber just took a f/t mouse!!! She showed no interest in it when I dangled it in front of her hide, looked very very confused; but then I put her in the box she eats in, she immediately struck at it and swallowed it. So plus is that she took a f/t, but minus in that she won't eat inside her normal cage....

way to go man, feels great doesnt it.

Congrats! Good to hear that he finally ate.

You're getting repetitive in your old age, Will. ;)

Another thing I noticed after she ate, was that she went in her cool hide and stayed there most of the evening. I was kind of suprised because she normally goes right into the warm hide, and hangsout to digest. Well, I look inside the warm hide, and theres about 3 big logs amongst the mulch. I took them out, removed most of the bark in the surrounding area, and she was back in there less than 20 mins later.
They're definitly clean animals, thats for sure.
